So what are the big differences here from the N55.

I like that is a mechanical pump, one less electronic thing to fail (as water pumps in general are known to fail on BMW)

Wow this seems like a motor that can take some abuse. I've never heard of a turbo having its own designated cooling system.

The BMW V8 and V12 engines have dedicated turbo electric coolant pumps

You answered my question before I could ask it.

I'm glad BMW has made a change to hopefully address the carbon buildup issues. I've seen some really gunked up valves.

Yes, the VANOS, upper and lower timing chains and oil pump chain are now on the rear of the engine.
Probably an engine out procedure to change now.

Injectors plug directly into metal fuel rails.
No more connecting metal hoses
3 Injectors per rail

Oh, wonderful. Having the timing chain in a place that requires pulling the engine to replace worked out well with the N47

This might be a deal breaker for me is I want a car I can keep for a long time.

It's interesting that BMW has gone to a mechanical, belt-driven turbo cooler at a time when drag on the engine is taken so seriously because of fuel economy standards.

I was going to say that new filter looks small, maybe half the size. I think it's thinner. It also looks to be in a very tight spot, changing that should be... interesting.

I don't see the charge air cooler, did OP mean to say intake manifold?

The mechanical water pump appears to have an actuator, I have to believe BMW wants/needs to retain the on-demand nature of the flow for efficiency.
