Hi everyone. For a variety of reasons, it looks like I will buy out my lease when it ends in 5 months. In Virginia, do I have to pay sales tax when I buy the car if I already paid sales tax in the initial lease? I did some searching, but found a variety of answers. Sent an email to BMW FS, but probably won't hear back for a few days. Just wondering if anyone from VA bought their lease out, and if so, did you have to pay sales tax again. Thanks.

Yeah, figured it out. Thanks. Ended up terminating the lease and going with an X2.

So you had to pay the sales tax if you bought out the car? I thought according to Virginia law you didn't according to this.

Sold by a vehicle's lessor to its lessee upon the expiration of the term of the vehicle's lease, if the lessee is a natural person and this natural person has paid the tax levied pursuant to this chapter with respect to the vehicle when he leased it from the lessor, and if the lessee presents an original copy of the lease upon request of the Department of Motor Vehicles or other evidence that the sales tax has been paid to the Commonwealth by the lessee purchasing the vehicle;

Hmm, you may be right. I called the DMV and BMW Financial and they both said I would be responsible for tax based on the sales price. Didn't matter; I decided it was definitely not worth paying the residual ($32k) for the 2016 328i with almost 50k miles on it. Very happy with the X2, although it is no F30.
