Interesting. The explanations using words can be quite subjective. I am curious to see how it behaves.

I have no imminent transfer case issues, but...
my new spare genuine BMW transfer case from will arrive on Tuesday, $615 shipped from a BMW dealer. With some credit card points, that price is actually $465. It will sit in storage until ready to use... if I even decide to use it. I am wanting to convert to rwd manual.

Update: the car made it back yesterday on the 800 mile road trip. On the mountain roads going uphill over turns between 55 and 70 you could feel the hesitation/power going in and out especially in comfort or sport. On flatlands I just drove on eco pro mostly so no issues then. But when in sport and under acceleration the power hesitate as mentioned before. Taking it in to the shop to get it checked out.
Luckily the car is under CPO and it's already had one transfer case changed. I am hoping that they can recreate this as there are no hills or curves for miles around me.

Hope you don't have anything major, even though it should be taken care of.

(Just open ended discussion) Maybe by personal failure, I don't see how a hesitation is the first symptom of 4wd/transfer case/output flange issues. I would expect grinding and or a strange knock/looseness to be first.

I wonder if certain cars somehow got differing differential ratios installed by accident. It seems that the cars that eat output flanges, eat them often.

Any details on your car?
Month/year production, sports auto option (paddle shifters) or not?

Just curious on maybe finding out why the failures happen.

Updated TC? How do I know what TC my 06/2017 built F31d has?

Supposedly it is the 27108643149 part number. And you would just have to remove the panels and see under the car.

Speaking of that part number, look what arrived last week for under $620 shipped (minus an additional $150 for some credit card points.. making it $467 shipped).
I don't have a need yet... but it's a good price.

What's crazy is that it comes with the transfer case module (VTG/Longitudinal module). That part there is $1500 list!

That thing is purdy. Still glad I have my good old RWD. I see you are self tuned, mind if I ask what you used to do that?

Good to know about the crank pulley. It should be considered maintenance item like the driveshaft flex disk. Not horrible for doing a good job on making the engine very very smooth and balanced for that amount of mileage.

That is a large amount of rubber on it, and rubber ages and decomposes over time. It's easy to check it at every oil change, along with the condition of the accessory belt.

You can get OEM Corteco crank pulley for a decent price, plus 4 new bolts.

Covered Under CPO thankfully.
Ah I haven't seen the thread you mentioned but will research.
Also thinking of going to a square setup with the 513Ms. Wondering if the staggered messes up the x drive even though the fronts are 245/45/18 and rear are 275/40/18.

The database doesn't support the conclusion that staggered setups (within the allowable tolerance) contribute to failed transfer cases.

True. What if the rear tires are 9/32nd ..so new and front tires are between 7 and 8 32nd?
Hopefully my transfer case was genuinely failing and not the tires.
