My car got damaged while coming home from work

I was driving home from work past midnight on the highway (DVP) and some object came flying right to my car; shattering my headlights (driver side) and damage to my bumper. I had 0 chance of avoiding it. Heck I dont even know where it came from. There was a truck in front of me and a car in front of the truck.

Went through insurance as I have comprehensive coverage with a $500 deductible. Insurance will pay for OEM headlight but not the bumper. They will only pay for a aftermarket bumper. Having said that the shop quoted me additional $658 from my pocket for an original bumper. Insurance will pay $872; which is the cost of an aftermarket bumper.

I am very picky and I would rather pay extra for the original bumper.

Question is how much of a difference is an aftermarket bumper to an original one.

Shop estimated total damage; $5300.

Pics are posted below of the damage and dashcam footage. The impact happens after 10 seconds.

I am driving a rental now, VW Passat. I really miss my car now.

To OP, sorry to hear about the damage, it is good that the dashcam video clearly shows the debris was midair upon impact, so comprehensive will cover this with no impact to premium.

You may be surprised the price difference of LKQ vs. OEM, it may not be as much as you think. So do ask the body shop to give u a quote for OEM.

My insurance company chose the shop as they are BMW certified collision shop and the work is guaranteed as long as I own the car. The price for OEM given to me by the shop was $1514 CDN and the aftermarket is $878 CDN. The shop did warn me that there could be fitment issues with the aftermarket.

Should I just get the OEM bumper?

@bavarianride sorry what does LKQ stand for?

Not too happy to be paying out of my pocket for something that was out of my hands...

LKQ = like kind and quality, it is insurance acronym for aftermarket parts that allegedly reaches insurance's high standards.

Yes CCRC is preferred route, and it is true that aftermarket can have fitment issues.

My F30's genuine BMW non-M front bumper cover is around $500-$600, is yours M sport?

Garage List
You can purchase a new OEM M Sport bumper from a couple dealerships in the US for $616 with a $200 core charge that you send a specific part of your old bumper and get back. Tricky part is going to be shipping.

I think US dealer shipping to Canada can incur customs paperwork and taxes(on top of $200-ish shipment, plus $200-ish to ship back core).

Also OP is using CCRC, which is required to get genuine BMW parts from associated (local?) dealer as part of the program.

My car is still in the shop. They were able to get me the OEM bumper without having me pay out of my pocket. I work at a condo and the resident knows the owner of the very shop my car is at. He was able to talk to the manager to arrange this for me. What a relief for me. However my front lip has some scratches and scuffs which I will have to pay out of my pocket as insurance does not cover it.

Got my car back a few weeks ago...on the day of pickup they had to readjust the new headlight...when they took it back one of the guys took it up the ramp to work on the car and cracked my front lip..shop is replacing it..and then the second day my tenant damaged my car again while reversing out from the driveway..his tires scraped the paint off and dented the drivers side passenger door..$932 to fix it...my tenant will be paying..back to the shop next week.

Am I having bad luck with this car?

Sorry to see this. This is minor damage. Shit happens.
Just get the OEM driver-side lens($400??? You didnt give us the model and the year of the car.) Reuse the inside HID.
Have the body shop sand and paste the front/hood and the little bumper area for $200-$300. Its only a little din.

I had a big army jeep backed to my Lexus while in the parking lot. I did the same. Got both OEM headlight lenses and reuse the HID, repainted the hood and bumper.

Off topic, you are 1 second behind a truck with an obstructing view from the wide/tall body of the truck. There were 3 cars in the front 1 second apart each. You are looking for an accident if the truck makes an emergency stop or accident in the front.
