wheel/rim width impact?

waddup peeps.

stock wheel specs on f30s are given as:
7.5x17 et37
8x18 et34
8.5x18 et47
8x19 et36
8.5x19 et47

how do you know how wide of a tire you could fit on a given wheel/rim width? for example, stock is 225/45/r18 -- could you fit the same tire on the 7.5 - 8.5 wide rims (assuming correct diameter)? i'm thinking there's a tire width range that you could fit on a 7.5 or an 8 rim, etc.

besides contacting the shops, anyone have any links to any reference site?

thanks.

tirerack lists rim width range for a given size tire in "specs"

it also lists the tire dimensions on a given width(measured rim width) which is typically the optimum wheel width for that tire size

find tires by size(you need to enter any USA zip code), narrow choices down by using with various sub menus under "Filter", choose a brand model from the choices, then look at "specs" for that particular tire.

here is an example... Michelin Pilot Sport 4S in 225/45/18, "specs" will give you rim width range along with numerous other info such as weight, overall diameter, section width, tread width on a given rim width(measured rim width)

There are a few calculators out there like this site. I've noticed some of them vary a bit, but the differences are minor.
