M Performance LSD on Xdrive 340i

Hi guys,
Just wanted to inform that I was able to mount the M Performance LSD on my xDrive 340i.

All you need is the Diff (Part number: 33108659989) and the rear axles of the non xDrive version (33207597685 left axle, 33207597686 right axle).
Only modification that was needed is to grind 10 mm (3/8") of the rear diff mounting point and add 2 10 mm spacer to the front mounting points otherwise the driveshaft would have been too long.

Hope it helps for you guys wanting to add the M Performance LSD.
One big benefit of this swap is you get the bigger and beefier axles and the bigger Differential too.

Wouldn't grinding 10mm from the back and adding 20mm to the front cause a fitment issue?

No issue with the xdrive? That diff is designed to 40i not xdrive cars.

Why would there be an issue if the final drive ratio is the same? The 40ix diff is the same one used in 30i rwd cars. And the 40i diff is also used in 35xd cars.

No there are no issues and there will be no issue. Its the same gear ratio as the xdrive diff.

Handling is great. Driving normally I don't feel any difference. No weird sound nothing. When you drive spirited the DSC is intervening much less, and you feel the back push in curves. On Sport+ it's much easier to do small drifts. On DSC OFF the car drifts nicely out of corners. (Car has KW V3 coilovers, H&R Sway bars front and rear, solid subframe bushings on the rear)

Any chances you would have pictures of the diff setup by any chance, I understand what you did but a picture is worth a 1,000 thousand words.

As promised here are some pics:

Here you can see the two fabricated spacer each 10mm

and here on the back mounting point 10mm need to be machined of.
This differential has not been modified yet:

It looks like if the driveshaft was remade to be a little shorter it would work as well. been thinking about a one piece anyways

Yes I have another solution in the making that's why I got a second diff and a driveshaft from a 335xd which should fit without modifying the diff at all.

Part number is 8651301

But it will take some time until I have time to mount it.

FYI: There are some M Performance Diffs in the german ebay for crazy cheap. Got the one in the pictures which looks like new for only 600€ there are others which are even cheaper. Tip: Search only with the part number

I apologize for responding to an older thread. Working with a 340ix 6mt and looking into this LSD swap. Did you ever end up testing the differential with the diesel driveshaft?

While I would love to do this I would honestly not be comfortable shaving the housing for clearance just in case it was over trimmed.

Thank you so much and I apologize once again.

Why not just get the diff built by diffsonline.com? I had them build mine for my 435i Xdrive.

Can this be done with the short 3.23 diff for the manuals? Does anyone know if the axle part numbers listed in this thread will work with the the 3.23? RealOEM doesn't specify an auto versus manual diff nor different axles sizes.

I'm assuming that those of us with the 6spd can order the linked below with the same housing modifications/axles?

M-Performance LSD install on a 2016 340ix

Hi all,

Adding to the thread as I just successfully completed this job. For my manual 340i-Xdrive, it needed PN: 33108659988. As mentioned above, it did require purchasing the non-xdrive rear axels (33207597685) and (33207597686) as well.

Here are some pics of the diff mounting point when grinding it down 10mm:

View post on imgur.com

I ended up buying some generic M12x10mm Spacers which worked quite well. Overall fitment is great, really glad to have the stronger axels too. Will see how it holds up over time.

I plan to drive it 1000 miles before swapping the fluid to Motul Gear Competition 75W140
