Added Apple Carplay (2018 440i)

After 20+ years of being a die-hard Cadillac owner, I have crossed over. And I absolutely love my BMW. About 5 months ago, I picked up a 2018 440i xDrive Gran Coupe. To be honest, I had no idea what any of the BMW naming conventions were and what they meant, when I bought mine. But, overall I am super excited and I love her.

Not an M, but certainly the fastest car I have ever owned. And now that I have tasted the apple . . I do want an M3 next time around.

BMW states that my model began having Apple Carplay standard in 2017. Mine, being a 2018. .. was sure to have it. Not to mention, that it was listed on the spec sheet of the vehicle listing (Bought it used at a Chevy Dealership, as I have found you get much better pricing when you buy a used lux vehicle from a non lux dealerhip).

Got the car home and could not figure out how to turn on CarPlay. For most people - no big deal right? But this was super important and one of my priorities of selecting the car. I passed on a Mercedes because it did not come with CarPlay. So, I was greatly disappointed when I called BMW and provided my VIN, only to find out that my 2018 BMW did not come with CarPlay or CarPlay ready. I can't even add it on from the BMW store.

Because I really wanted this feature, I began looking for after market solutions. Many places did offer a solution . . . for about $399, plus cables and tools. Costing as much as $600 when done.

I forget where I saw it (on this forum), but someone had posted about their experience having Carplay coded by http://bimmer-remote.com (I believe he is also a member here on the bimmerpost forums). From the post, they claimed to have had a great experience using bimmer-remote. So, I decided to take a look at it.

The fee for Carplay was notably lower here ($49). My BMW did not have a wifi antenna, and so I would need to order a cable ($15), wifi antenna ($10) and plastic pry tools ($10) to remove the moldings and install the wifi antenna.

I was a bit nervous at the low $49 price. Why is this so much less expensive than other places? The frugal ME decided to take the risk. And I was glad that I did. Let me just say that . . the guy (Jakub) from Bimmer-Remote was so helpful. I don't know anything about anything LOL. He helped answer all my questions. And helped me pick out the proper cable (and cheapest one) for my coding needs, and the right antenna, etc. Best of all? No matter what time of day or night I emailed him - I got an answer back within hours. Usually within minutes. Really great service.

I paid my $49. He emailed a download. I connected to my BMW with laptop and cable. Ran the code (about 5 mins) . . .and BINGO (*the clown)!! I have Carplay.

Although I do NOT have a wifi antenna installed from factory. I have not yet needed to take the moldings off and install it. My carplay has been working for several days without any connectivity issues. I will keep the antenna though, and put it away - just in case I see connectivity problems down the road.

This was easy, and cheap. And the customer support was great (I am the most annoying customer . .because I have questions lol).

So, just wanted to pass this along . . for those looking to do the same. I love my Carplay

I am having the same issue, my car is a 340 which I also assumed would have Car Play when I purchased it.

My issue is that I DO NOT have the AUX port in the armrest, which I was told is the reason that Car Play could not be activated and that I would have to get a 3rd party emulator like Bimmer Tech.

Did your car also not have the AUX port? And this guy could make it work without that?

Sorry for delay in response - But, I have had no issues at all with my install. It was a breeze to do. They sent me an app and I connected my windows laptop to the car port . . it flashed the iDrive and was done in 5.

I did NOT even need to install the wifi antenna. My vehicle does not have one - but my CarPlay is working just fine without it. No issues in the past few weeks with it at all.

I don't believe I have that port. I had to run a cable from my laptop to my port under the steering wheel. The cable was $15 on Amazon and so easy.

To clarify it requires a computer within reach of the ENET cable connnected to the OBD port. You could move a desktop temporarily if it remains connected to the internet.
