Thumbs up Fix: annoying door creaking - bmw 3M tape solution

~ I know many have discussed the annoying creaking noises that come from the door areas as a result of the upper door felt/rubber rubbing against the black shadow line trim (typically sounds more like the noises are around the door pin/striker area). Cleaning and waxing the area always seemed to help for a short while but not long term.

I brought the bulletin to the attention of the dealer and they ordered a roll of the 3M Teflon tape.

My local dealer and preferred technician graciously allowed me to take the $250 roll of 3M tape and apply the tape myself because I'm a bit particular...with the understanding I would return the unused portion of the roll (more than 50% remains after installing the tape on both sides of the car).

Please see the detailed photos below of my install...

I began by cleaning the black trim thoroughly with rubbing alcohol to remove any wax or silicones to prep the surface for the proper adhesion.

I then closed the doors and ran blue painters tape about 1/8" above the rubber door felt for an alignment tool once the doors were opened for the installation of the tape. Thus allowing a clean straight line once completed.

The install was easy and I applied the tape dry with the ability to adjust as needed before firmly securing the tape in place. I also used a dry microfiber towel and pressed aggressively to assure full adhesion once finished.

End result...

All and all - fairly easy to do with the attention to detail and prep. Total install time 45 minutes.

Finally no more door creaking on uneven pavement. Problem solved.

+1, would be interested in knowing as well. Last time I brought my car in with this issue, the SA dismissed the issue and told me, "The door seals creak when they get dirty. It's your responsibility to keep the seals clean and wash them frequently." I told him I do keep my car clean and wipe down the seals as well, and he simply replied that it's not clean enough and there's probably still dust stuck on it. As the op mentioned, cleaning was only a temporary solution.

I was pretty disappointed so hoping that if I can show them an actual service bulletin with a more useful resolution than simply "keeping it clean," then it might help.

Had the Teflon tape applied per the below thread back in June/July and I haven't heard a single squeak or rattle since. I mentioned it to my dealer and they said the first thing they did was apply the Teflon since a number of people had the same issue. Worked like a charm.

The solution has been around for a while. Had mine done at least 1 1/2 years ago and you wouldn't even know it was there if no one told you, plus it works.

Thank you for this post!

Your solution is probably the best permanent fix, but this gave me the key for a similar (if cheaper/simpler) solution. My doors have been squeaking for a couple of months now over speed bumps and other road irregularities, and I've tried a variety of lubricants liberally applied around the rubber seals on the doors and frames, with little luck. In fact, sometimes it seemed to get worse.

But based on this thread, I cleaned off the rubber seals themselves (using water + soap), and then simply applied some DuPont dry Teflon spray along the bottom half of the shadowline trim. Voila, noise is GONE! Thanks again.

I wonder how long this'll last...

Had mine done by dealer a few months back the problem just show up in December, dropped the car off this evening and hopefully they can fix the rattle. Not to mention the steering column had a buzzing noise as well.

You can also use silicone lube. It works really well and protects the rubber too.

The same tape that costs $5-10 on Amazon.

Took the car in yesterday and that is what the dealer had used on the repair but previous repair only last for a few months.

It's like this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...3&sr=8-3-fkmr1

Given, it's only 5yd rolls, but still, 33m would be 36 yards, 36/5*4.88=$35

Wildly overpriced at $250, but hey, it's BMW, what does one expect?

Thank you! Should I be worried about "aggressive permanent acrylic adhesive" on my door seals?

Perhaps this is better?

Perhaps, but at 1" wide, I would think it might be too wide. Other users reported using the one I linked to and reported it worked great.

Here's another one, the exact tape, again for cheaper, although not quite as cheap. (only like 5yd, but you don't need that much anyway).

http://www.pemro.com/productDetails....src=googleBase

Same exact 3M part number/spec as the BMW tape.

Dammit, I just started hearing this last night. Just slight little creaks around the window area while going over small bumps and uneven road surfaces. Must be the cold weather. I never heard this last winter.

So basically you apply this tape to the shadow trim so that the rubber seal of the door rests on the tape instead of the trim.

KGB, you said you use silicone lube....you mean like silicone divers grease? Like wipe it on the rubber every time it gets squeaky? I have a jar of this stuff for O-rings in air lines.

As much as I like the idea of getting rid of this annoying creaking, I am worried about how this tape will look after a while. Will it yellow? In case another application needs to be in a year a two can it be removed without damaging the rubber? etc...

Need to drop the car off to dealer tomorrow and they need to replace the tape and realign the door, hope that would fix squeaking noise.
