M Performance Exhaust - I can't hear you

I recently purchased a pre owned MPE (340 number on the can and 10k miles on it) for my 435 GC and got it installed yesterday. First thing my mechanic said when I went to pick the car up..."are you sure you got the right exhaust" I said what do you mean? He said "it's louder when you start the car, but that's about it". With an awkward grin on his face he said "how much did you pay for that?!?!" I've worked with him for years.

A little back ground. I'm 43 and coming from a 2017 f80 competition pack with the OEM "sport" exhaust, which is at least 20 times louder (maybe more) than this m-performance exhaust. The M3 sounds like a monster inside the cabin (active sound deleted) next to my F36. The funny thing is, the majority of the F80 guys don't think the comp pack exhaust is loud enough. I don't understand how BMW can call this a "performance" exhaust then you have to drive with the windows down below 30 and at WOT to hear it!!! And yes I did watch videos and thought it sounded okay in the drive away shots. Maybe I just got used to the noise of the M3, because I remember being impressed by the MPE I had on my f30 328. And I also remember thinking "woah, how can that be street legal" when I first heard the sales manager start up my M3 on the showroom floor.

So now, the question is, how can I make it louder (no drone) to where I can actually hear it with the windows up? MPPK (only louder crackles?)? Resonator straight pipe? Catted DP? Will the catted DP pass emission check in MA?

I don't want to give up on it just yet.

Thank you all.

If you want it louder do a resonator delete and add a DP. Fabspeed catted DP guarantees no CEL.

Woah...that catted DP is almost 1,500! How much louder will the car be with a deleted resonator? I'm looking for a 2-3X increase in volume.

I doubt you'll go this route but another very inexpensive idea would be to delete the muffler and switch out the resonator with a "vibrant ultra quiet resonator." Apparently this setup has been a fan fav for a few members around here. I'm betting keeping stock downpipe would be ideal too with this setup.

It will be significantly louder with the DP. Video below of a 235i with the Fabspeed catted DP and MPE.

if you have not done it already, remove the connector to the left exhast flap while it is open so that it remains open all the time. seal the open connector from the elements and "zip tie" it out of the way.

then, get this...

In sport+, that is always open. In sport (driveline mode enable in idrive), it opens under decent load / RPM, closes again at cruise.

OP. I have the Active Autowerke catback, and have similar results. I am running the ER catted downpipe, and the combo sounds amazing, but it's really only noticeable at lower throttle / higher load. As you crack the throttle open, or the revs come up, the car doesn't sound that loud.

Don't do a muffler delete it will drone all the time. Do a resonator delete first and see if that makes your car more throaty. If not consider a downpipe.

X2 on theresonator delete, it will open up that MPE. But if you want loud, sell that MPE and go with a full catback exhaust from AWE. I personally prefer the MPE, but I also dont like loud popping exhausts.

I pulled the clip on the stock exhaust, wired the flap open and the only change in sound that I noticed was on start up. Will I notice more of a change with the MPE?

I don't like driving the car in sport or sport + due to it staying in a lower gear most of the time.

if you're in comfort most of the time, the flap is closed most of the time. i think the MPE will still be louder if the flap is open even if you're driving at a level where it would normally be closed. MPE(axle-back) is basically the mildest loudness upgrade of all the axle-backs, though.

it would have been better you got a REMUS or AWE cat-back instead, but since you already have the MPE i still say just fork out for the CG Precision DS-1 catted down pipe. it's not cheap but you'll get a decent performance bump in addition to the sound. shop around and check out the classifieds below. black friday will be coming up very fast as well.

also in the future you'll get better responses for N55 engine modifications in this sub-forum.

A resonator delete will only increase drone since you drive in comfort most of the time.

If you want the MPE to be louder with your current driving habits you'll need to go catless with the oem resonator. Else you change the system.

The loudest valved exhaust with the valve closed is probably that new Valvetronic system in a recent thread — bar the really expensive meistercrafts and Armytrix systems. But those systems al have a what seems like huge mufflers in the axleback. — The race version (valvetronic) is an axleback with a small straight through resonator on one pipe, and just a valve on the other. The street version replaces the small resonator with a quieter muffler.

Get a real exhaust. Akrapovic, AWE full exhaust, meistershaft. Those are the 3 exhausts that will have you sounding like a lion going down the street. I have a full awe exhaust and ER catless Downpipe. Most would say it's too loud but perfect for me.

I'll try the resonator delete first. If that's not enough I'll be putting the MPE up for sale. Thank you all for your help.

A cheaper immediate option is to eliminate the pin controlling the flap. I usually drive in comfort mode so I did this when I installed my MPE. Just use a pair of pliers to squeeze and pull it out, set the flap to open and wrap some picture wire around through the groove to keep it open. More noise and burbles in comfort, sounds great with BM3 base setting. Year and a half later it's still holding fine, cost was $2.

This is only a small step, others in here have the right answer, get yourself a down pipe and you'll be getting more power and drone free sound increase.

That's going to be a waste of money.

Maybe you're just used to a louder exhaust, when I got MPE for my 16 435i coupe, I could hear the difference right away, not just on cold start, even while driving, it has gotten better after the break in period.

It will sound the same as the other 400 MPE + no resonator videos on YouTube.

I think you might be right. I remember test driving a 435 when I had my 328 and thought that it sounded a lot better. Another proof point, the first thing the guy that rented my F80 comp pack said upon return..."that exhaust is crazy loud, that's OEM?!?".

I'll take a before/after resonator delete video for you all. There are a few on YouTube and it seems like a pretty decent difference in volume.

+1 for AWE. I started with MPE, wasn't happy and deleted the resonator. Held me over until eventually I wasn't happy with that, and added a CG Precision Catted DP.
That was sort of sufficient and I probably could've settled, but decided I wanted something louder, more refined and more aggressive.
Now I'm at Catted DP + full AWE catback. Perfect for me. If you don't want to mess with emissions or change your downpipe, I would go the AWE route. AWE axleback is way more aggressive than MPE, and there's no drone with OEM downpipe.
Remus is quieter but sounds great and is valved. The new Valvetronic also sounds quieter than AWE in the videos, but you get a valve (I thought I would miss having a valve but I don't at all).

Quick update:

I removed the value spring last week and it helped a bit, especially since I mostly drive in comfort mode. Much louder cold start and more pronounced pops.

Today I removed the resonator and I couldn't believe the difference. The cold start and the pops and crackles are just as loud as my F80 ZCP. My mechanic drove it down the street for me to hear it and it definitely sounds better than my M3. Not quite as loud, but deeper more exotic sounding. I'm very pleased with it, for now...;-)

I'll try to make a video tomorrow.

Thank you all for your suggestions and help here.
