I guess that's the whole point of the course. Obviously its an absolute no no, you just have to suck it up and see those lines out until the bitter end as you've found out. Fair play for giving them space but..yeah, you know....3 points innit.
He was pretty chilled, but just mentioned it later.

To be honest the lesson I took from this is not to do this particular manoeuvre during the advanced driving test. I’ll continue overtaking slow moving things across double white lines in this situation at other times. If the law permits this for slow moving bikes (and other things) up to 10mph, then I’ll use my judgment if I think it’s safe up to say 15mph, just as I might not always adhere strictly to speed limits.

Bearing in mind that this was a wide stretch of road with good visibility and nothing coming the other way, the two other options:

both options seem absurd to me at least!
Yeah the obvious issue with option 1 is some clown plows into the back of you at 40mph. You then in turn hit both cyclists..
Option 2, pass a little too close for comfort one avoids an obstruction at the last sec and pulls out, you then clip them or at the very least you get sworn at by the angry biker for passing too close.

You did the correct thing in my view, assessed the risk and made safe a potentially unsafe situation.

I agree. Option 1 also risks someone else behind me overtaking me and the bikes, and possibly others in between.

It has been a while since I picked up a Highway Code (34 years to be precise!) so I wasn’t aware of the 10mph rule. I also can’t imagine that it could be rigorously enforced in the above situation as they’d need to measure the speed of the bikes at the start of the overtake.

And this is exactly why I don't believe that it's in anyway advanced motoring. Slavish following of laws when the sensible course of action says otherwise.

Double white lines where the line nearest you is solid. This means you MUST NOT cross or straddle it unless it is safe and you need to enter adjoining premises or a side road. You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less.

I'd always judge the speed to be 10mph or less , unless they're bombing down a hill at 30mph.

I just did the free mock theory test (rock and roll) got 9 out of 10, thought I'd fail miserably.

Not surprised at the valuations being touted having just had a quick browse of used LRs.

2020 Discovery 4k miles - quoted as original list of £73k and now up for £69.5k. Despite a heavy facelift having been launched.

2021 Defender 8k miles - quoted as original list of £62k and now up for £64.5k (yes, a queue jumping premium).

I thought maybe this had peaked, for my car at least, when it lost £300 in WBAC value last week. But no. Email received today and it's back up £850. Over £6k up since May.

I traded out of one of my M140i's last week. Was up £5k since when I looked at the start of the year. It was 2 years old, 24k miles and a good spec but I paid £31k, it's just gone up at the dealers for £29k.

Prices are going to slide back at some point so I'm glad I moved into something that has already depreciated a lot and hopefully less in the next few years. The 440i cabriolet we got is 3 years old and 20k miles, but was just shy of £65k list (it's got a great spec). Seemed a no brainier to chop out of the M140i into something that I would not of looked at / afforded to spend the money on a couple of years ago.

This to me was an example where the law and common sense diverge.
Perhaps reconsider doing the IAM as it's not about what you personally think is common sense, its about adhering to the letter of the highway code and they are really anal about it.

By the way adults on racing bikes will be travelling between 15 and 22 mph on flat roads and significantly more downhill, but less uphill, just for your future ref.

So I did a thing. (I can only imagine how that sentence grates on some of you )

Caved.

WBAC offer was too compelling on my most expensive outgoing £811 a month for the F Type. It was a big treat for the recent company pay out, although it's an exceptional car, I can't justify it, still using cars less than ever, 1000-1500 miles a month.

Retained the lions share of deposit and it's gone. 5 months Chester WBAC was a great experience highly recommend, didn't / could t dispute price or find a mark on the car.

Current fleet and plans are all about the FIRE.
Thank you Terry @tengocity

Their calculator says I can retire in 2 years (not true) but I have another round of investment at work that has a 4-5 year cycle and after that I'll go part time / slow down.

So what am I driving now? You know I just have a love affair with the F series cars. The X2 always was in my name and still is. It's now the family bus. FWD mini platform blah blah it does the job and to me looks cracking.

Some recent exciting achievements:-

1. Changed front and rear wipers myself. What an experience. £46 total for Bosch. By by squeaking wipes. Literally never down this, tyres in about 8,000 maybe.
2. Wife's 'work' on the alloys about to be undone, 2x£200 for total refurb on 20inch diamond cut
3. Complete interior clean and exterior dual polish. It's white and not a mark on it but hey ho.
4. Need to sort some breakdown cover, first time ever out in a 3+ year car for me
5. Insurance money back was nice and this plus 1st road fund will cover all of the above.

Mrs now has 'Nan Van' as the kids call it. Kia Picanto in white. Manual. 70Hp I believe. Rocket ship. Lovely. Paid in cash from deposit and the rest from us.

End Result.
£260/month total outgoing on cars

This has reduced from over £1000/month and it's already diverted into extra pension and savings.

Eventually I'll tire of the F39 but it's only at 15,000 miles and everything is mint. I'll wait out the BEV game now till a path forward is clear and we're on gen 12 batteries or what not.

Really very very happy. Nothing wrong at all with the F Type but … well … just can't be arsed having a car as pride and joy. For us now it's all about the new house and making that exactly what we want and planning extraction from work in 5+ years….with a bit of 2xkids Uni thrown in too.

Car guy? Hmm.

It is amazing how many of us have lusted after a car and bought it, only to find that when we are offered silly money back for it, we have taken the money and run. Is this the reverse of man maths?

I've found myself looking at this across most of my hobbies/non-essentials. Ultimately that's ended up with me selling off a few £1000's worth of guitars simply because I'm not playing so much, I can play just as well on something 1/10th the price and I've been offered more than I paid, and indeed more than they're worth, to part with them. It's only stuff at the end of the day

I own my F36 outright but I am also thinking about offing it as WBAC are within £200 of what I paid for it last year (with almost 25k miles less than it has now) and getting into something simpler, cheaper, more utilitarian and diverting some funds to other investments/interests mostly based around the new house and doing things with my girls or longer term investing.

Maybe I'm just getting old...

Sounds a very sensible approach, cars should be fun but always after more important things. As I am now heading the wrong side of 55 I am hoping I have retirement covered (although I dont ever want to really retire) and I put in to my ISA 150% of my monthly car cost....

Uni is easy Chris, student loans and tell them they need to understand life costs!

It's all well and good selling up and preaching 'I do t need a fast/flashy car' but now not having had a nice car for a few months I'm crawling the walls! Lol.

The extra cash is nice, but then I do love hopping into a nice car and enjoying a drive, it's a part of life I enjoy, and something I personally miss.

That said, cutting overheads and retiring definitely has an appeal, I'm just not there yet.

Interesting! Generally I'm very happy with my G21 but it's 14 months old and has yet to clock 6k miles. I keep telling myself it's not been a typical year - and that the mileage will soon go back to more like the 1k/month I anticipated when I bought it - but in truth the car can stand for several days at a time in the garage without turning a wheel and therefore does on occasion feel like an expensive ornament. Being honest I've thought about cashing-in on the current price boom as I could probably get pretty close to what I paid for it; problem is, to my way of thinking that doesn't do me any good if ultimately I need to replace and would do so with either the same again or something very similar!

Stop selling your cars people! I have 4 weeks left and would like the squeeze to continue...

I wouldn't want to be paying for two cars and I think it's sensible to own one and keep it, I have had doubts about my decision to order a new car but I've off set the additional cost with a equal saving elsewhere (who knew I drank so much)
