Let's talk about injectors
We've probably seen around 10 cases or so on here of failed/leaky injectors being related to engine replacements, linked to scored up LDS cylinder walls.
It doesn't seem to be widespread, but it looks like most of the occurrences all happened <60k miles. It seems to happen to both stock and tuned vehicles (much like the eccentric shaft). Does running an E85 mix or having the car tuned put additional stress on the injectors in a significant way? I'm wondering if we need to replace injectors at periodic intervals to safeguard against this. Say every 40-60k miles? Of course there's no guarantee the new injectors won't fail either. And with FCP Euro, this becomes somewhat financially feasible for most of us. I'd imagine these short blocks will become harder and harder to come by as Gen1 is just about discontinued as soon as the current F22 M240i gets replaced. I'm in this car for the long haul, so just wanted to start a discussion on it.

This is a great topic to discuss. I don't have any personal data, other than the fact that I have not had any injector issues, thankfully. Car was tuned starting around 15,000 miles, then gradually pushed with more boost to its current mileage now at 51,000 miles on Pure 800. E30 - E40 for the most part, and I've yet to see any symptoms; I rarely do regular fill ups in between. Wish we knew if these injector failures were due to poor fuel quality, or maybe driving style. I wonder if has anything to do with people switching gasoline brands?...probably unlikely, but I always use the same gasoline/E85 brand consecutively.
In the grand scheme of things, it does seem like these injector failures are isolated, but it's a darn shame that these lead to such catastrophic results. Would I do injectors pre-maturely just for peace of mind? Definitely. 13538625396 is the part number I found off FCP. Too bad they're currently about $323.49 a pop (x6 --> $1940.94 ). |

My cylinder #2 took a shit from a bad injector. Scored up wall and metal inside the oil filter. Dealer replaced all 6 injectors, but they didn't replace the engine. Now I have a engine with a spark plug that gets covered in oil bi-weekly and starts to misfire. Currently looking for a low mileage junk yard engine. BMW has always used shitty injectors. My N54 has index 12's for a little over a year and half (latest and greatest apparently) and now they're leaking and I just purchased another 6 a few days ago.

Yes e85 will sometimes make a injector get stuck usually in the open position.

Lucky man. I'm about to shell out and have them all replaced this winter. I'm at 46.5k miles now, so probably around 51-52k. I run E35 so not a super strong ethanol mix. Hopefully they last until then.

Bought the car at 39k miles and it spent a week in the shop getting fully checked out, anything under warranty that could've been done was done. Interestingly enough, the oem injectors I had in there were apparently over torqued , not sure if from factory or someone else has been in the guts of my new baby

I think most of us are fine with the injectors, but I'm a cautious person that's willing to pay for that peace of mind. And yeah that's a smart move getting everything done under warranty before it was up.

Follow the build ! @dud340i Also, any injector upgrades out there? Instead of doing port , couldn't we do Pumps + injectors and keep everything DI

The plasma coating in the B58 and S58 are it's Achilles heal. It should have been sleeved like the N54 and N55. It sucks BMW went this direction. They were so close to a monster motor. Odd that the B58s have injector issues seeing that injectors are a non-issue with the N55. N54 motors? God help those owners. Last edited by XutvJet; 07-16-2021 at 11:59 PM.. |

Which part is BS though? My story or BMW denying the warranty because they found the DME was previously flashed?
Also to add more to it eventually the stock turbo blew on the compressor side of the turbo and it sent metal inside the engine. If anyone can help locate a B58 engine please let me know. I'm looking for something with 20,000 miles or lower.
