Ordering new tires, need advice on higher sidewall
Morning guys. Today I hit a real nasty piece of metal on the highway and it destroyed the sidewall on one of my PSS's. Current setup is 18x8.5 ET35 with PSS 245/40 all around square setup.
I commute a lot more now and don't track my car so I want to switch to all seasons. I have Michelin X-Ice 3's for the winter. I'm looking to see which tire size would be best for the wheel specs. 235/40 235/45 245/40 235/45 is what I'm learning towards to have a bit more sidewall.

235/45/18(26.3") taller sidewall will provide better ride, impact protection and reduce wheel gaps further. will look a pinch beefy if you don't mind.
https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...3&postcount=29 you may want to also consider 255/40/18(26"). max size on 8.5" width, so there's tiny bit of sidewall bulge, reduces fenderwell gap with girth. https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...8&postcount=46 https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...7&postcount=19 no bulge on 9" width https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...4&postcount=66 245/40/18(what you have now) fits optimally on 8.5", lower profile provides sharper turn-in and looks nicer, especially if you're lowered. since you have winters, i'd actually stay with a summer such as MPS4S, however if you are definitely switching to a ultra high performance all season then i'd go with MPSAS4, ContiDWS06+, Goodyear Exhilarate |

alohasurftoad I cannot thank you enough for your reply. I ended up ordering the 235/45's so the ride is a bit more comfortable (even better for the wife and daughter). Will report back once I put more miles on the DWS06+

Alohasurf Drive drives great on the DWS06+. Nice and smooth and great over bumps. Thanks!

Please post pics from side or 3/4 angle of the car on new tires. Considering same setup for winter.

On 8.5's. ET35
Note to self, idk if I should have put the tire shine on it. I like the matte look for I will find one that maintains that.

I want to do the same with my next set of tires but not at the cost of acceleration. Granted you went from 245/40 to 235/45 which is a +2.3% increase whereas I'd be going from 225/45 which would only be +1.2% so I feel like you'd be more likely to feel a difference than I would. |

Honestly I have not noticed any changes. From a stop it's not noticeable and on the highway the car picks up great.

Isn't ride more comfortable on 245/40 than on 235/45? Does 235/45 have a higher or a lower sidewall than 245/40? Considering those 2 dimensions for my summer square set up (currently running stock 17), I would like a higher sidewall as well, seen 245/40 looks meaty and I like it, but I want smooth and comfortable ride. As I read most prefer 235/45 set up.

245x40%=98mm sidewall
225x45%=101.25mm sidewall(oem) 235x45%=105.25mm sidewall 245/40/18 best increased performance 235/45/18 best combination of ride, bump in increased grip, slightly reduced fenderwell gap. no need to overthink this. choose based what you desire most. either choice is fine. |

If he's running 18x8.5 all around, he could also run a 255/40-18 tire which is the original sidewall height. |

No, the 235/45 has a larger sidewall:
https://tiresize.com/calculator/ Good to hear. I'll be getting my next set of MPSAS4 in 235/45/18 |

FYI, 235/45/18 is typically 26.3". for some reason a MPSAS4 in 235/45/18 is 26.7". it's sidewall will be 0.2" more than a typical 235/45/18 sidewall, so it'll look quite beefy and heigtening gearing slightly more.
for some reason, many MPSAS4 tires are taller than typical for a given size, not sure why... . Last edited by alohasurftoad; 12-11-2021 at 02:03 PM.. |

That's weird, I wonder why that is. Good to know though, guess I'll have to pick a different tire.

i don't think so. using nominal numbers, the aspect ratio is not really correct. 235x45%=105.75mm =4.16" sidewall =(4.16+4.16+18) =26.33" diameter.
if you do the math, a 235 that is 26.7" is more like a 47% aspect ratio sidewall. maybe the mold designer partied too much the night before he made it, . |
