Price to replace clutch
Hey all,
BMW 335xi 2013. Nasty clutch judder form standstill after the car has been driven for a while. I can also hear input shaft bearing when idling (goes away when clutch disengaged), and while driving. Probably time for a new clutch (apparently the pressure plate is the culprit for the judder from standstill). I can bring it into the dealer, but they will charge me diagnostic (at least 4 hours to examine tranny) if not covered under warranty, and they tell me that clutch is a "grey area" - fine line between wear/tear and mechanical problems. Only 87,000 km on the car. But I did buy it CPO with 69,000 km. That CPO thing is a real sham... Is it worth risking hundreds of dollars in diagnostic fees only to be told that it is not covered under warranty, or simply have the clutch replaced? I got a quote from an independent garage for $1,100+tax inclusive of labour and parts (OEM) for full clutch replacement (but no new flywheel, only resurfacing). I'm opting for the latter. Any thoughts? |

Are they going to put diag fee towards repair/replacement if it's not covered under warranty? Even then, I don't know if that gamble is worth it, mostly because you don't know how the car was driven for the 69k km.
1100 seems reasonable (canadian $?). |

Exactly. I should have negotiated a clutch replacement when I bought it CPO. The issue was present when I bought the vehicle. My bad. The two-year extended warranty (around $1,500) still paid itself, I think; had a thermostat problem covered (was told it would have cost $600), and rear shocks replaced (maybe another $500-600?). And I will have a full inspection done prior to end of warranty, other issues may arise
I could probably have the diagnostic fee applied towards replacement if no warranty coverage is offered, but even then, it will likely be significantly more than the $1,100 (CAD). I think the dealer replaces flywheel as well, which makes it significantly more expensive, whereas the independent garage told me that flywheels are generally good for 200,000 km, and they would only resurface mine. But I would be replacing all bearings (pilot, input shaft,...) and plates. |
