Calvin's Car Diary M5

I do enjoy watching his videos, the M5 looked beautiful until you hear it.

I wonder whether the person who partexd it would get a call for giving them a lemon as that doesn't sound cheap

Curious about this too but the Mercedes guy in the video said the problem wasn't there when he test drove it. Guess it's the risk they take and I'm not sure they'd be much recourse for Mercedes.

100% the previous owner knew of the problem. With that spec they would have got a lot more to an enthusiast rather than trade in.

Hard to know how bad it is over a recording. It didn't sound like the end of the world to me, but I'm an arm chair mechanic at best

I'd have loved to seen a video on what was actually wrong with it and what it would take to be repaired.

Put a bit of fear into owning one of these though, I thought they were pretty bullet proof relative to the generation prior.

My last two cars that I part exchanged into BMW weren't even looked at. Parked up, left keys, drove off in the new ones. Suspect that's what's happened here.

Most BMW salesmen I've dealt with locally wouldn't know which end to open to find the engine, never mind what sounds right and wrong.

I bought my latest from a salesman who told me was in his first week in bmw after having worked for vauxhall for 4 years. True or false it stopped me asking any questions.

Same, turned up at 4:30pm in December dark forecourt. The guys checked the mileage, quick walk around and that was it!

The boot was a wreck after water damage hence the 100 magic trees 🤣🤣

Got to smile at the irony of it being parked in the "Approved Used" bay.

Just goes to show how little attention dealers pay to these cars. Flip them quickly; skim the profit; next.

That's exactly it. They have zero interest in the actual car, it's just a set of numbers. Any that are flipped and then come back to bite - it's a warranty job covered by BMW/the insurance co. and more profit for the service department.

That's the risk car traders take, as "professionals" they are buying cars as seen unless the Merc dealer has covered up the issues and lied, good job he has a relationship and didn't move the car off the premises

Calvin knows exactly what was wrong with it - look at the many M cars he's bought before. Hes a good lad and very switched on.

ten grand to fix it then? if i had a good bmw specialist in my pocket i'd go for it, it looked a lovely car. though its probably less risky to buy a good one and add the carbon bits.

I think the video mentioned that the car had been remapped. For the main bearings to fail I'd assume that this was either a huge power remap and/or a lack of sympathy & maintenance.

If the main bearings are shot the crank, rods, pistons, liners and the block may also need checking and/or replacing. That said, even if a substantial engine rebuild cost £20K that's still inly a total cost of £30K for a well specced M5.

But a very good F10 M5 wont be £30k in current climate - I think JLR1969 got a bit more than £30k for his immaculate highly specced very low mileage example last summer (2016 car) but I doubt that one, even with no issues, would be worth £23k these days at that mileage....and with that history. It is a 2012 car.

I didn't realise (remember) the car was that old - definitely borderline then.

Looking at the service history of the car, it wouldn't surprise me if it had been clocked at some point. The annual mileage from January 2018 to February 2020 is virtually nil. That also ties in with when it went from BMW servicing to 'independent garage'

Exhaust emissions over MOT permitted levels also. That seller really done MB over when trading in.

I got £36,000 last July and it was immaculate with carbon interior and exterior kits
