DIY Coolant Change (2013 335ix)

Hey, I am looking to do a coolant flush on my 2013 335ix and was wondering what the best method is to do so. Is pulling the hose at the water pump under the vehicle my best bet? Are there any specific steps that I should know about before doing it myself? This will be the first time I am doing it. The vehicle has about 50k km on it.

look for the lowest coolant hose and disconnect it, it should get rid of most of the fluid, then refill. There is a procedure to purge air afterwards from the system that is documented on youtube (look it up, pretty simple to do).

Where are the good old times when there was just a drain plug in the radiator (and even engine block)... :-|

Unless I confirmed a problem with the coolant I wouldn't be changing it at only 50k km. 100k km would be a reasonable interval.

I have to change the oil filter housing gaskets, so I thought it may be a good idea to change the coolant while I am at it. But if its to soon then I might just top off the system

In that case I'd be inclined to change it. Anti-freeze isn't expensive, so if you have to go to the trouble of disconnecting a hose to remove some of it you might as well remove all of it.

ok ya fair enough. I saw somewhere that its recommended a 60/40 coolant to distilled water ratio for colder temperatures. Should I go with that or do a 50/50 mixture?

The label on the bottle should have mixture ratios listed.

As i recall (may be faulty, cuz I'm OLD!), 50/50 will give you about -34F. I know it get "chilly" in Bolton, but probably not often lower than that!

Here are the ratio from the label. When I was living in Quebec, I saw -40C.

I pulled the hose at the water pump, used 50/50 (<2gal needed), then initiated the bleed procedure (I also have a 2013 335):
Close cap on coolant expansion tank and perform the following steps:

1. Connect battery charger/power supply.
2. Switch on ignition.
3. Switch on low-beam headlight.
4. Driving experience switch must not be in ECO PRO position.
5. Set heater to MAX temperature and turn fan to lowest speed.
6. Press accelerator pedal for 10 seconds to floor until pump runs. Procedure takes approximately 12 minutes. (Electric coolant pump turns OFF after approx. 12 minutes).
7. Fill coolant expansion tank to MAX level.
8. Check cooling system for leaks.
9. Remove ignition key and wait approximately 3 minutes before repeating cooling system bleeding procedure, if necessary.
10. When bleeding procedure is complete, close coolant expansion tank cap until marks on cap and tank arrows line up

Ya, there might be the odd day in the winter that it actually gets that cold. Do you think it would be best for me to go with 60/40 mixture just in case?

I would do 60/40. With climate change, you never know. Look at Texas where the utility operators decided not to winterize their power plant.

After looking the minimum temperature recorded in Toronto:
The coldest minimum temperature of −33 °C (−27.4 °F) was recorded on January 10, 1859.
You are OK with 50/50
