If the passenger mirror dips when in reverse, then having no dimming feature guarantees the best chance of seeing the kerb at night. Maybe that's the thinking in Munich.

Everyone cuts cost. I had a 2004 Saab conv. Then I had a 2008 Saab conv. Same trim level. The 08 didn’t have a auto dimming rear view mirror. The locking gas cap cover was gone. They took out the locking cable. The smart door locks became dumb. Of course a few years later they went bankrupt.

Most cars in 2018 have folding mirrors as standard now. If this was a standard feature then I might understand them cutting costs but this was an optional extra... |

Making a profit doesn’t exclude cost cutting. If they can sneak one by,they will.

I have the original factory option lists for my 2015. And it says it has auto dimming inside and out. BUT, I don't have that little telltale border around the edge of the outside mirrors, and if they are dimming, is isn't very much. Is there a test I could do to see if they actually dim?

You can try shining a light into the sensor on the rear view mirror and the side mirror will dim. You will see the colour change at night when there is a car behind, the inner section of the mirror will turn darker than the border section. |

What’s cheaper? A mirror or tinting your windows?

Hello,
Does you driver side mirror looks like this when dimmed? Is the outside border so large? I am asking because recently I had the car in service for a repair and after that I have noticed this. The dealer tells me is normal that only the driver sode dims (now reading this thread I believe him), but still I don't remember noticing such a large border around it before. Thanks! |

I have an '18 340i in the US and my driver/rear view mirrors dim, but my passenger side doesn't. I notice it every evening bc I'm blinded every time I look that way lol.

BMW is not the only manufacture to remove passenger auto dimming mirrors.
This is what happens when bean counters run the show. I imagined they saved millions of dollars by doing this. I remember my 2000 GMC Envoy had auto dimming mirrors on both sides. Then in 2004, I bought an identical optioned GMC and the passenger mirror was just regular glass. None of my vehicles of any brand have passenger auto dimming mirror since 2000. |

Only the driver's and rear view mirror are dimming, passenger is not. I personally haven't noticed glare from a passenger mirror in any car for the most part; it's the rear view that throws the most glare. |

My 03/2016 340i has passenger side dim. I was surprised as it's not normal these days.
Coming from a GTI with no dimming mirrors I noticed the difference immediately. |

My 15 F32 didn't come with the folding mirrors. I did a retro fit for the folding mirrors. The loom was already there. Just a case of plug and play and coding.
The passengers side didn't have the dimming glass. I bought the glass and internals and swapped them over. I now have dimming on both sides. I just thought it looked odd without the matching mirrors and you do need the dimming in both mirrors especially if you have a truck or van close up behind you. |
