MA Inspection Question
Going to get a VRSF Catless DP in a few weeks along with BM3 or MHD tune (havent decided yet), just wondering will I pass my inspection? Driving a 14' 335 m sport, stock exhaust. Read a lot that the flash tune will get rid of the CEL. Don't really want a CATTED DP, rather go catless. Any info would be great.
Thanks in advance. |

Yes I'm just planning on getting a VSRF DP, and a flash tune either bm3 or mhd, haven't decided which yet. But keeping the rest of the exhaust stock. No muffler/resonator/cat change/cut off. Haven't done any other mods, only other thing I plan on really changed is the charge pipes and the FMIC and that's it. I enjoy the sound of the DP and stock exhaust, no need for a new intake. |

I think you're getting some bad info here. The CEL may be off on your dash, but the tune won't allow your car to get in the ready state when plugged into the inspection machine. When your inspector plugs into your OBD it'll never get into a state of readiness.
I'm due for inspection this month, so if I'm wrong - someone please correct me! |

The way Mass inspection works is it allows pass only if 3 out of 4 components show readiness. I forget what the 4 components are, but some are mandatory such as evap system. Catalyst I believe can show not ready and still pass.

What supporting information do you have for this?

This is basically same for NY as well... must have 3 out of 4 emissions flags set to pass NYS inspection.

![]() I recently discovered flash tunes were only suppressing the CEL, but not setting readiness, so I wasn't sure how inspection happened without knowing someone. People would only post that they know someone, or they would swap back to stock and then back to aftermarket. The latter method is just not worth it at all.

Anyone know exactly which four parameters are being looked at to pass emissions (in NY) ? |

A vehicle will fail the (NYVIP2) OBD II inspection if enough monitors are reported as “Not Ready.” Generally, OBD II vehicles from model year 1996 to model year 2000, inclusive, will fail when more than 2 monitors are set as “Not Ready;” while model year 2001 and newer vehicles will fail when more than 1 monitor is reported as “Not Ready.”

Will find out in May for Massachusetts, but based on the info I've gathered from a few inspections stations with the new MA inspection system, a catless DP with a non-ready system will result in a fail/rejection. Therefore you'd have to swap out the catless with the stock when you go for your inspection.

So it's possible that there's a threshold of 1 or 2 tests showing failed readiness and you are able to pass, but the cat failing readiness is an automatic failure regardless of the count.

If anyone has an OBD scanner it usually has a basic inspection readiness scan. When you scan your car it will show the monitors they look for.

I don't believe those can scan for readiness by state, can they?
