Angry No air flow from vents

Hello,

I have a 2015 F30 N55 & Yesterday I made a four hour drive home in some pretty hot weather. So I had the AC going strong the whole way home. Everything worked perfectly fine.
I stopped home for a few hours. When I proceeded to get get back in my car a few hours later I get no sort of air flow / noise when trying to activate the air conditioning. No fan noise, no AC noise, no air flow. I have tried to get back in a few times. Still no air. I’ve tried AC, no AC, and heat on all different settings. Nothing will make any noise or produce any air.
On one drive I thought I felt some cold air at my feet but was hard to tell while wearing shoes.

I check 4 fuses that all seemed fine. Forget the exact numbers, maybe I look at the wrong ones ?

Any idea what could cause this ?
Bad fan maybe?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I just got this car two months ago. Hate to see problems already.

TIA

I had a similar problem with freezing AC components in hot and muggy weather.

Let it sit overnight, preferably in a garage, and see if it's better in the morning.

If it is, there is a service bulletin for this problem.

It has sat for two full days. Still nothing. Assuming it’s the blower, but into the dealership we go.

Same issue here. A little research found several older posts on this issue. Apparently they (BMW) know of the issue and can reprogram the A/C controls to prevent it.

Sure seems like an iced up evaporator coil, resulting in loss of flow. Typically a temperature sensor in the coil to shutdown the compressor when it approaches freezing temps. The former R134a systems typically ran at pressures that approached 32 degF on the low side, but not below freezing. Need to educate myself on the new refrigerant's properties.

Car is going in tomorrow, I'll update with their findings.

the freezing problem is sporadic, works fine until it actually freezes. if OP's issue is the blower not blowing at all then it's something else. my buddy had the freezing issue and his car would blow air just fine, it would just stop blowing cold after a while, but the next time it would be fine and act up again later in the drive.

Update: Dealer checked, nothing found (of course it wasn't 100 degF today).

Note on report: "D1, single time fault for compressor shutdown due to high pressure caused by high ambient temperature & overworking of the AC system"

Doesn't really explain the loss of air flow, despite the fan running at high speed.

Known issue. The fix is a $1.42 part. There is also a TIS on the fix. The DIY takes about 15 minutes.

Thanks for that! Found good descriptions of this issue & solution, on the F80 board. I'll pick up the part (evap temp sensor spacer) and install it tonight.

Sure. BTW, the "special BMW tool" indicated in the TIS for removal of the sensor turned out to my forefinger and thumb... The sensor just pulls straight out - no clips to release at all. There are 2 friction tabs on the inside sides of the sensor itself. Just pull it straight out.

When the core freezes, it closes the vents and circulates air across the core to thaw it out. That's why you are hearing the fan.

I've had that when I kept the max fan speed too low. Now I don't go below mid, and never had had an issue.

Interesting little spacer they developed, only moves the sensor out about 1/8”. Not an easy spot to access (6’-3” old guy).

Surprising they would run the evap temp that low and freeze it. The new refrigerant is nearly identical to R134a’s performance curves, especially at the lower pressures/temps. Normally R134a systems, the low side pressure equates to ~40 degF. Have to dig a little into their operating parameters.

Forgot to reply and update. Took it into the dealer, still no air near closing. They started it the next morning and it worked. Strange but has been running well with no issues yet. Will wait for the problem to replicate before replacing anything.

Thank you for these links! I called my dealer with this part number and they weren't able to pull it up in connection with my VIN. my car was built in May 2014, so it is just on the transition date. Are they being obtuse, or is there adifferent part number/procedure for my car? 2014 328i base

Also, if anyone has had this work done by the dealer, what did they charge?

thanks!

slightly different problem - right side doesn't blow

The vents on the right side do not blow. I checked the manual controls on the vents (dials) and that is not it. I tried turning off the heating/air conditioning by setting the fan speed to zero and also turning off the car. Both right and left are always set to the same temperature. I tried many different permutations over the past 2 months.

Is there some fuse that I can check? If so where and which one?

Currently, I often drive alone. If there is a front passenger, then I direct the center left vent towards them and the far left vent towards me.

The cabin air filter was last changed about 15,000 miles ago.

IMO and BMW diagnostic app or preferably ISTA would be helpful here. You can test individual door actuators hopefully find out which ones are failing.

Sorry to hear about the AC issue on your F30 N55. It's frustrating when problems arise shortly after getting a car. It could indeed be a faulty fan or perhaps a problem with the AC compressor. It's best to have it checked by a professional mechanic to diagnose and fix the issue. Good luck with the repair!
