Workshops keep unplugging dashcam!

Hi guys

Wondering if those of you with dashcams have the same problem but everytime I take my car in, the workshop disconnects my dashcam.

I went for a road test with a tech at the dealership today and first thing he did when he got in was unplug it.

Is it just me but wtf??

Some shops do it. Some don’t. I know every time I go on a military base they make me unplug it.

If it doesn't feel right that's usually because it isn't right.
Sounds fishy to me.

Yes. The tech was driving like a nut with me sitting next to him. Put it in drive when the car was still rolling backwards too and v.v......wtf?

As with disabling the dashcam, aren't Tesla's always on? Wonder what the go is there when a Tesla goes into a workshop

Whenever my car is in the dealership for service, they unplug the dash cam. I suppose this is to protect them, as we may see what we're not supposed to see. I'm perfectly ok with this, so I tend to unplug my dash cam before I hand the car to them.

Tech Here...Why do we disable your dashcam? You car is up on the lift, recording. You can't see anything except the wall in front of the car. All of a sudden you hear a sudden smashing noise. Metal on Metal. The cameras view shakes a bit each time the noise is heard. HEY WTF THEY ARE HITTING MY CAR!!!

You're damn right we are. And we disconnect the camera to keep people from being all Why you doing X to my car? Of course disconnecting the camera leads to Why you disconnect my camera. But that is easier to explain than why we were doing X to your car that also doesn't make sense to you. Your car is no longer brand new. Things don't just unbolt and fall off in your hands. Some things need some persuasion. It's the way it is.

When fleet vehicles come in, I put a mask over the camera, because it is hard wired into the car.

Good points!

I leave it on, and could care less if they unplug it. It's there for those "just in case" moments as far as I'm concerned.

Now if my car fell off the lift, I'd want to see that footage! But that actually happening is slim to none!

Not worried about noises working on my car. My concern is my car being joyrided especially after the bmw tech had no mechanical sympathy driving it with me sitting next to him. You would think it's bad to engage D and gas it when the car is rolling back still right? Id expect an L plater to do that. Not a trained mechanic.

Did you plug it back in? That’s what I would have done.

They probably have other cars to joyride in. What service was your car in for that it needed a road test?

I’ll admit I am one of those that never waits for the car to stop rolling backwards before throwing it into drive. Haven’t worn out any transmissions in multiple cars yet.

Was in for the annual visual inspection, spark plugs, and oil change. 20000km service.

Yes sure there are more fun cars to thrash but nonetheless theyre thrashing irrespective Ly it would seem.

No not free.

They said it was due for a major service so I just did what they said.

It was hornsby bmw for anyone Sydney based and my car is a 340

For all the people with concerns of joyrides...Which are definitely founded concerns...Maybe find a shop where you can be 1 on 1 with the person in charge of your vehicle. The service write at the dealership is not watching over your car. He may not even ever lay eyes on it. He really doesnt care what happens to it. But if you find a quality independent shop, where you can approach the service writer, techs, and even owner...You might find you are a bit more trusting when you can see who has hands on your car. Also, smaller shops are going to start asking questions when you're on a test drive for more than 5 minutes.

I've always taken my car to bmw dealerships which are quite big and all behave like corporates with staff with distinct roles unfortunately. Not exactly interested in building a relationship with you. You're just viewed as any other customer. Well that's my experience.

I don't blame them. It's your car, but if I were them, I wouldn't want someone watching my every move in my own shop.

Who's really that bored to spy on the workshop? Like seriously. You're only going to look at footage if something goes wrong. I certainly don't sit there with my popcorn and watch footage on Saturday night or any night. What about the customer? Don't think customers like their cars being thrashed or used to pick up lunch.

It’s a dash cam. If they are working inside the car, you aren’t going to see anything. If they are working under the hood, the dash cam is only going to show the hood. I don’t understand the point of this thread. Also, from what I’ve seen, the techs turn off all accessories anyway.
