Does this really require full roof respray?

Looking for a bit of collective knowledge. Driving along today to pop into the dealer and figure out why my auto map updates aren't working, I heard an almighty clang which must have been a stone being flicked up by the car in front. It's caused a small chip and dent, not major but right in the sight line and I'm a bit pissed given it's barely a month old.

As I was at the dealer I checked into their body shop, who informed me it requires a full roof respray at a cost of £800. Needless to say my mouth hit the floor. Anyone have any experience with this kind of damage? Is a full respray really needed, and if so what should I be paying?

Appreciate it's a little hard assessing from pictures, but if anyone has any thoughts or experience it'd be appreciated. Cheers.

I have had a few of these and just touched them up and ignored them. Sod’s law, you will repair it and it will happen again.

Haha bless them for trying it on.

Judging by the photo, its tiny and unless there is a deep gouge, touch up at least would do the job or a smart repair at best.

It's small but deep, down to the metal it seems.

Appreciate the thoughts so far, you know how it is with your P&J, you want it to look as nice as possible and it's in a conspicuous spot. Although at the same time I'm worried a full respray will result in a bit of colour variance with the rest of the car. It's not like a panel you only see from one side.

What's that chipex stuff like, anyone used it? Seems good value if it does a better job than normal touch up paint which never looks great. And it's 25% off if bought tonight. I don't care if it doesn't look absolutely perfect as no doubt more chips will arrive! Full respray feeling more and more like overkill by the minute.

Just touch in. Use a cocktail stick to get the right amount of paint and some accuracy. £800 my arse!

I asked ChipsAway this week about a similarly sized chip on the bonnet. They also suggested a touch-up paint. If that didn't work : full bonnet respray, £350.

Can you imagine going to the doctors with a slight cut on your forehead and he says you need complete re constructive surgery, a nose transplant and to be safe, liver and kidney swap?

Might be an idea, I'll need to donate a kidney to pay for the respray!

I'm going to go down the chipex route, I never get normal touch up paint right and chipex is pretty much the same price!

Think you should just cut your losses and trade it in for an M4

OR

Just stick an M badge over it.

It is highly likely that if you have a full panel respray that there will be the odd paint imperfection when it leaves the bodyshop anyway. Remember these are being resprayed by hand in different conditions then when it was completed in the factory by a robot. Further it could marginally effect resale value should someone use a paint depth meter as it will be completely different to every other panel.

No doubt you would have the work done and a week later the same or worse occurs.

Cars get stone chips and there is not much you can do about it other than touch it in and forget about it.

Horizontal surfaces genrally dont take so well for smart repairs - so the full panels need to be sprayed.

For that, hat are you happy with? Touch up and forever see it or try smart repair

Seriously, you’d be out of your mind to consider an 800 quid respray for that. Touch it up as best you can and forget about it. Cars pick up stone chips. Short of never leaving the driveway there’s not much you can do about it. The first one always hurts though and always seems to happen within a week or two of getting it. I know, I’ve been there. It sucks. But you soon forget about it.

Also, in my experience, if you are in any way fussy or particular - and I’m guessing that you are - then a quality respray is difficult to get. I’d personally rather live with a couple of stone chips than a poor respray of the entire panel.

Agreed on all points, chipex ordered.

Yes I'm pretty ocd on my cars, but not to the tune of £800, although I'd also be worried about the colour variance as some others have also suggested. That'd be more noticeable than a touched up chip I reckon.

Thanks to everyone for their comments and suggestions.

Touch it up as advised. Is there a small
Dent or just the paint damage?
