How many km/miles before being fully performant

Hi all,

I am buying F30 330ix with the 8 speed sport shift and wonder how much km/miles I need to make before being able to push it to the limit, without damaging the engine/gearbox.

The BMW dealer said I can do it right away, but the owners manual states that I need to wait for 2000km before trying the launch control.
On the other hand, the BMW repair shop claims that I need to wait for at least 5000km before pushing the limit.
Has anyone any suggestion what the safest option would be?

Thanks.

If you consult the owner's manual - written by the people that made your car - all will be revealed.

I didn't do any launch controls, but I drove it like I stole it from day one. Still purring like a kitten after 20k miles.

If you have nothing good to say why bother responding at all?

20k miles is nothing. Long term reliability refers more to like 100k-150k

True. But who asked about long term reliability? OP asked if launch control starts would damage engine components. The answer is yes, potentially. That could happen with 0 miles on the odo or 100k+ though.

Your first post and you are already trolling people. That's a promising start.

Gilespy,
I would just stick with 2000k per the manual, 5,000 is excessive.
>4,500 rpm >160kph until 2,000 then go crazy.

Modern engines are built to such fine tolerances you are unlikely to cause damage regardless of break-in procedure, but it never hurts to be safe.

So much for the city of brotherly love.....

Back on topic, I follow what the manual says then BMW can't deny a warranty claim saying you didn't follow proper break-in.

To the OP: I asked this question a couple of months ago and got some flak for it. Anyway, there is no consensus on this issue. I just followed the manual, tried to vary the speed/RPMs but kept it under 4500 for the first 1200 miles.

FWIW... I just picked up my car at the Welt last week and was advised to avoid doing over 120k (75m) per hour for the first couple hundred miles or so. It seemed a tad bit conservative, but that's what I did. If all else fails then just go by the manufacturer's written recommendations as others have suggested.

It all depends. Are you leasing? If so, who cares!!!

The manual says be gentle for the first 1200 miles and then you can increase the abuse.

+1. I'm not saying tear the car up but realistically before the warranty and maintenance is up you are completely covered. After that it is someone else's problem.
