BMW 328d xdrive F31 wagon n47 to m57 engine swap

I'm currently looking at f31 wagons and wondering if its possible to swap out the n47 to an m57 for more power and tuning potential. unfortunately we don't have the 335d wagon here in the US otherwise I would've just bought one of those.
I'm just curious how hard would it be to swap the engine and what other parts need to be replaced.
Also has anyone done this before?

I suggest a thorough trawl through realoem.com to check which components are the same/different apart from the engine. Seems to me that an obvious list of things to check would include :

ECU & wiring
Exhaust system
Radiator
Transmission
Transfer box
Rear diff & driveshafts
Front diff & driveshafts
Braking system

Far easier and cheaper to sell the 28d and buy a 335i/340i/etc. Your starting point (power) would be far higher and these units are very tuneable.

I've actually looked into this. Add sub frame to this list

and Watsey we only get the 328d and the 330i in the F31 in the US. I think the most viable option is to swap the 340i into the wagon or even full M3 is more viable than a N/M57 swap.

I think a N57 swap from a F10 535d will be more doable as that combo was sold in as the 330d or 335d in Europe. A M57 swap will be tougher as the F31 was never made with the M57 engine. But you will probably end up upgrading the tranny, diffs, and transfer case to accommodate the extra torque. Tranny for sure was the F31 328d here in the US uses the lower spec 8HP45 unit.

Bottom line for OP if BMW sold a configuration somewhere in the global, then your chances better. Even better if you limit the deviation from the baseline donor car (i.e. keep it diesel). Brew yourself a cup of coffee and sit down with RealOEM to diff the parts between a US-spec 328d F31 and a Euro-spec 335d F31. That will be what you need at least.

Thank you guys so much!
It is way more difficult than I realized to do the engine swap. I thought it was going to be just the engine, wiring, ECUs and other bits and pieces. Swapping the whole drive train is a bit too big of an undertaking for me as I have little to no experience of working with cars. I still wish there was a 335d wagon here in the US but oh well...

If you really want to look into it and have some money to spend to do it, talk to Bradley Tourt on the Facebook group North Amercian BMW Diesel Owners.

Exactly what I was thinking as it's the same engine management, ABS, gearbox, DPF and immobiliser/dash wiring & software structure.

Fitting an older platform to newer wiring and control standards would lead to additional coding and wiring pain I suspect.

Plus the N57 is an aluminium engine, whereas the M57 was iron until the very late ones iirc.
