My 1 got totaled

Hi all,
My impeccable 128 convertible with 18k miles on it got totaled in the storm. I am not sure what to do. It is highly unlikely I would find a low mileage 1 so considering the 2 convertible. There is one new one near me but sadly all wheel drive. I started looking at a z4 or maybe even a 4 series with the horrific grille but feels too big for me. Or just go all out and get a 718 which is a dream and that I know I love but a lot more $.

I know there was a lot of changes from my 1 to now. The shortage of cars make it hard to test drive them to see how they compare. I always only had rear wheel drive and I like them.

Any of you that could suggest how different a 2021 2 all wheel drive might be?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Why cant use test drive the 2 convertible? That is what I would do. It would answer all your questions.

Prior to purchasing my OG M2, I test drove a 2 series w/a track package and all wheel drive it was a hoot and as I was about to order one the CA said...you know they're coming out w/an M2...well that was the end.

BTW, allocations should have been release last night for Nov and ~2 weeks for Dec. Should be easy to find a build slot.

Was passing by the dealer yesterday and saw this car (430).
The 1 and 2 Series had always instinctively appealed to me, but once I saw this 4-Series I was hooked.

If you can find a Z4M40, it will be more livable than a 718 and it has the same wheelbase as my old M235 vert. It is also RWD only.

Not that I am prejudiced but I second the motion for the Z4. Forget about the 718 as I also think you would have a nicer driving experience with the Z4!!!

Unfortunately, there is no 2022 model and it seems unclear if there will be another. Even with the m2, only the coupe has been announced. And turns out the 2021 I had found was flooded in the storm, too, and they just haven’t pulled it off the website yet! Sigh.

I can get a build slot for a z4. Wish I knew if another compact convertible is coming out next year.

There is still a little inventory available at dealers for the Z4, why are you looking to build from scratch?

Are you considering the 30i or the M40i?

What color combination (exterior/ interior) and what packages?

What state do you live in?

See it, like it, buy it.

If something comes out next year then deal w/it then.

Due to COVID, waiting will only result in less standard and optional features.

For what it’s worth I have had a 128 for a year now as a kid hauler have my 03 Z4 for 10 years and just added a 07 Z4 coupe so I’m pretty biased as to what I think you should do

Ha!

Thanks everyone for the replies.

I think I located a z4 about 40 miles away. Will call Monday to see if it is still available to test drive it.

I drove a 2018 230i xdrive today. Can’t say I was a fan. The wheel was like a feather! What the hell happened! I remember all the talk about the steering change way back but didn’t expect that. The sport mode was a bit better but still. Not sure how much the all wheel drive has to do with it but definitely disappointed.

The 2021 boxster was quite the opposite. Really enjoyed it. But also, comes with a 10% add on to the msrp. The world we live in!!!

Next up an m240 and the z4, if I can find them.

Wow, I guess this is proof that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I find that so ugly that it's genuinely hard to look at. You made the right choice with the 2 versus that

If the Z4 is the M40i model then you will have a fair apples to apples comparison to the Boxster. Also while BMW dealers are selling at full MSRP because of the worldwide car shortage and they don't rip you off by charging you an additional 10%.

Welcome to the club..

Personally I just cannot force myself into buying any BMW after 2013. Precisely because of the way steering feels and total lack of feedback. But also because all of them are getting stupidly bigger with every generation.. And certainly the grill... ugh (but that's subjective of course).

PS: No, AWD has nothing to do with steering feel. RWD cars feel totally disconnected from the road too. My 4Runner has much better steering feel and steering feedback than modern BMWs...

Soooo I have now driven a few cars and have a decision to make. It seems like from the newer cars I would need to get an m235 or m240 as the driving experience was not for me in the other 2s. The prices right now are obviously up there and while I like the 2, I’d still prefer the 1. I miss my 18k mile beauty!

I found two 1s (under 30k miles) that I have now driven somewhat close to me. (I am too sketched out to buy a car online without seeing or driving it.) So can’t imagine I will find many more, certainly not now. 128, 3 owners, super minimal - the only option is heated seats, no leather, auto dimming mirrors, even power folding mirrors, let alone premium sound. All of which are things that I wanted. In checking the car I realized the phone wouldn’t connect via usb and the dealer won’t fix that. Said aux works but I didn’t check that myself. No Bluetooth. No xenon. Also, the car carpet was a bit wet when I did my test drive but I know the car had been detailed that day. (Of course, I am paranoid about water damage since my car was totaled in the storm.)

The 135 (1 owner) is a little beast. Like, almost scary. I obviously am not used to the extra horsepower and this model has a bunch of options I don’t really need like the m sport package. But nice looking wheels though! I am perfectly happy with the 128 power. That said, some ‘basic’ things to me like the lights, folding/dimming mirrors, etc. are there. And lumbar support In fairness, I didn’t think to check *all* operations like Bluetooth, just assumed it was all working. Clearly not an experienced used car buyer. The 135 is $10k more than the 128. I have read that the engine could present more problems than the 128.

I can’t see me finding/liking another car more than the 1 right now. (Except the boxster but not willing to pay the ridiculous fees and spend min. 85k.) but I am so torn about these two choices!!! I didn’t think I needed much in my car except an enjoyable drive and good sound but I find myself already missing silly things like the mirrors. Ridiculous?

I have printed the vin options and been comparing but driving myself crazy. I think I am going to get one of these two…but which one?! To be continued…

oof.. tough choice

Here is my reply to a guy who was thinking of switching to 335i from 328i. I mentioned there most major issues with N54 engine (though yours might come with N55 which is a bit more reliable).

https://www.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1866684

Yes, you'll get more issues with 135i.. but! it's way more fun too
If you're mechanically inclined and can work on your car - go with 135i
That's what I'd do but I fix most things myself.

What year is the 135i? Later models used the N55 engine, which is more reliable than the earlier N54 (and sounds better).

You only live once. That over-spec'd 135i sounds like the right car in your situation. When I bought cars with fewer options than I wanted, I regretted it ...always thought about the lack of those options when I drove the car.
