Upgrade trade in suggestion

Hello there!

I currently have a 2015 328i and want to upgrade to either a 2017 330i M sport or a 2016 340i M sport

In terms of reliability and maintenance cost, which one is preferred? I know B58 engine is quite reliable as it is upgrade of N55 and B48 from N20 , but what I would like to know is for parts and service cost on the long run, which one is better? as a 2016 340i and a 2017 330i is only 3000 CAD difference from each other both fully loaded M sport with KM lower than 30k

Thank you!

Do you simply want a basic sporty daily driver with great mileage or more of a performance car?

That should dictate your decision.

The B58 engine is not an upgraded N55, it's an entirely new engine with different construction. It is hard to know long term, as the B48 and B58 engines are only about 3 or 4 yrs old. I prefer the 340 but that is just me, you have to decide for yourself if the 340 is worth it.

I just want something that can be kept for longer time without having to buy an extended warranty while also parts are not more expensive to replace

Wouldn’t it be cheaper to buy the extended warranty then a 1 or 2 year newer car? You say nothing about performance, just reliability.

we don't really know how reliable these newer 4 cylinder turbos in Hondas and Toyotas are gonna be compared to BMW Audi Merc... the Honda CRV is having issues with the antifreeze mixing with the oil in the engines and Honda still didn't do nothing. I really do not think that the Hondas and Toyotas and Lexi have the stereotype of being any more reliable then BMW I think the BMWs are more solid and will outlast the new camrys accords and crv's. they all have possible electrical problems turbos injectors etc etc all the new cars are Basically in the same "reliability Boat". in my opinion... its just matter of not getting a dud or lemon and taking care of it properly....

Both of them should be equally unreliable in the long term. I would go with the in-line six as it will be dramatically more fun and has more upgrade potential.

Reliability = should be equal since same engine design
maintenance cost the inline 4 as oil changes are cheaper

just get the 340i. More of an upgrade to the 328i. 330i is debatable to me as whether it's really an upgrade as it's 0-60 is slower and dinan dynos show b48 putting out less power and torque than a n20.

Lots of new 330's for sale on CL. I think some are disappointed with the engine performance. Not necessarily being problematic, just not as fast as the 328.

I'm not clear on your reason for upgrading. The 2015 328i should be very reliable long-term and the 2017 330i isn't much of an upgrade compared to it. In fact, as someone else mentioned, the B48 feels a little slower as compared to N20. So, if you are simply worried about reliability - keep your 2015. If you want a performance upgrade - go for the 340i. The answer seems pretty clear to me.

Well I want to upgrade to either one of them , but like if I get the 340i , will i sacrifice the reliability of the 328i just for more performance?

That's really a toss-up. So far the B58 seems solid, but who knows down the line? Same can be said about the B48. Seeing that neither the B48/B58 are proven, I would just go with the more powerful one at this point. At least that would be a real upgrade from your current ride.
