Just checked today, 4000 miles and the main tank is at the minnmium mark. Inter cooler tank is full.

I had a low coolant light around 3000 miles, with some evidence of coolant leaking around the cap. May have been high pressure due to low coolant? The dealer topped it off and gave me some extra coolant to take home and top it off after the engine cooled down...yes it's lower when cooler. I do have to top it off every 1000 miles or so, but check it regularly now before the light come on.

Seems like in 3 months I've dropped significantly below the minimum line. 9 Months ago it was at max. Is the normal rate or should I get this checked out?

Also, is filling with distilled water recommend?

Had low coolant warning in October 2016 ~4k miles, the secondary tank was dry. Dealership filled it up with no questions and I went on my way. No problems since.

people, dont forget to check your coolant levels when the car is cold so you get an accurate reading.

everyone keeps saying that the coolant system is a closed loop and that coolant consumption is not normal, but it is so common with BMW's especially if driven aggressively to the point where i see topping up my coolant and checking it occasionally as normal. what gives?

It may be evaporating through the coolant reservoir cap as this appears not to be pressurized and the cap feels somewhat loose. That would explain why no leaks are detected when doing a pressure test. They may need to redesign the reservoir and/or cap.

I dont think it is evaporating, I opened the tank while the car was warm once to check coolant levels and release some pressure due to aggressive driving 5 minutes earlier and alot of pressure came out. it doesnt seem to be leaking at all.

I'm almost certain its just being burned through the engine because it happens faster when you drive aggressively, but many people keep telling me this is not possible. I know for certain there are no leaks though and this is also happening with other cars owned by friends/family like an Acura and Mazda. they are new cars, no chance of those leaking either and we checked.

I'm not sure how it would be burned through the engine as it doesn't go into the combustion chamber unless it's leaking into the oil or the engine itself. That would not be normal and would be a serious problem. Much of the coolant is water and it would have to be going somewhere, it can't technically be burned I would think. It remains a mystery as there aren't any leaks.

there are a few threads on this already.

seems like some people are replacing the cap to fix it.

Grab an oil sample and send it to the lab. That's the best way to know if collant is making it into the engine. I'd do it sooner rather than later. Sure maybe they need to 'burp' the system, yet for ~$30 you can get an analysis to be sure.

If some cars got produced with 50% water, it would lower the temperatures to 140C without a cap and vent at 155C with a cap. Normal coolant temperature under load might be 160C. In that case, it would vent (evaporate) with the wrong mixture and not vent when the concentration is raised. I know that coolant is normally heated above the normal boiling point because I know someone (not very bright) who got badly burned trying to remove a cap before the engine cooled down.
Yes that is why it is pressurized to raise the boiling point.

That's not really true regarding the oil analysis. Copied from one of the linked threads:

if it's not burning (check exhaust for sweet smell) and you're losing coolant, then you have a leak somewhere in the system or it's evaporating past the cap. easiest way to verify is pressure test the system and the cap.

correct. personally i wouldn't play with the percentage. most coolant concentrate bottles will tell you the max and min ratios as well as the boiling/freezing points for each combination. usually it's between 40%-60% mix, otherwise you risk freezing the system in the winter or boiling it in the summer.

I just brought mine to the dealer and they added BMW coolant and pressure tested for leaks free of charge. Even got a loaner for a few hours.

As I've said before those that had there coolant drop low once and then refilled is not an indication of a problem as the bmw dealers here in Germany are telling me that due to the design of our systems it may not get filled all the way from from the factory and may need a top off after some miles have been driven.

people keep posting this but how does that make sense? if your oil was low after 4000 miles, would you just assume that they didn't fill it all the way at the factory? not to mention multiple people in here have had to get it topped off more than once.
