talk me into 20s on my 435 F36 m-sport

i just realized that my wheel indecision isn't picking out a wheel style, like I thought it was. I realized I just can't commit to 20" wheels & required tires.

Talk me into 20's because I don't think you can. I'll just pull the trigger on some aggressive 19's with mean tires.

my car is my daily & 40 minute commuter over fun roads. its a 435 m-sport sport 8AT, currently with 18 inch wheels and stock RFT.

There are pictures of F36's with 20 inch wheels and the wheel size fits the car nicely. The gran coupe is a large enough car for 20s to work. I think I'd hate the thin sidewalls and the harsh ride (especially if i did springs). I'm not willing to daily drive a $60k car that has a harsh ride.

thoughts?

20s might be overkill (especially if your roads are anything like ours), but I do agree the F36 can handle them.

Depends on tire size. Walking around the dealer lot I actually prefer the look of 19's on that size car. The 20's look like they had rubber bands as tires. That is all with factory spec sizes. I'm guessing you may have room to get a beefier tire (larger than OE) if you went with 20's. But I'm not sure.

First issue: the look.
I think there are some wheel designs that make 20" wheels looks too big for our cars, especially if it isn't lowered. I personally think 20" wheels can look great on our cars.

Second issue: the ride.
In SoCal we don't have the best roads but there are nowhere near as bad as east coast. That said, when I had 20" on my Audi S5 with coils, I didn't think the ride was harsh at all. In fact, it felt even better but this had more to do with coils versus stock suspension. Obviously if you get new wheels you won't get run flats again. 20" run flats would be unbearable in terms of ride. So 20" tires does not necessarily mean harsh ride.

OP, I wouldn't do it!

I test drove a 435 DHP with the OEM 20s and was not happy with the ride and handling. it felt like the dampers were struggling to keep the tires in contact with the ground over bumps (i.e. the suspension felt like it was "floating" or "skipping" when I hit a bump) and there was no benefit for handling (turn in didn't feel any better and the tire wide was the same and I didn't notice a grip benefit)

I personally like tires in contact with the road over bumps (i.e. my 335 with 704 suspension and staggered 19s) more that I like the big wheel / "dubz" look

I don't think 19s are too bright. 20s are downright stupid. How's that?

Agree. 19s max. My GC runs 18" and the most I'll ever do is go to NRF wider tires and call it a day.

get dubs and stance it while you're at it
sorry just my opinion that they probably would look out of place and way too big.

Had both 19" and 20" on my F30 and would never go back from 20".

It's not exactly the same car but here is my opinion.. our roads are complete sh!t to be honest. You can go 200km/h and out of nowhere there will be a pothole the size of your car in the middle of the express way and you'll have to press your luck to get around it.
So much for the roads in Bangkok.

Driving on those roads the ride comfort from 19" to 20" isn't day and night like you'd expect it to be.
I was running 19" Vorsteiner with Vredestein and now ADV.1 with 20" Vredestein wheels and couldn't be happier. The difference in ride comfort is really subliminal. My wife didn't even notice and usually she is the first to complain about anything car related (stiff ride, loud exhaust etc). I am still on stock suspension but will switch it to Bilstein in the upcoming days to drop the car for optical reasons. It's my daily driver, I don't track the car or need performance - I just want it to look decent (and it's still a long way to go...)

Tons of pictures in my signature.

No...just no. Unless the roads you drive on are as smooth as glass.

The weight penalty is not insignificant either. 19s max in my humble opinion.

I will not talk you into 20, or 19. 18 is the right size for street, and track. The fad with large wheels and skinny tires that was inspired by the ricer scene has no basis in engineering. It's just cosmetic so I can't talk you into a personal taste decision.

19s are the best compromise between 18s which look small on the bigger bodied F30, and 20s which will compromise handling, acceleration, braking, ride, and comfort.

18" offers the best ride in my opinion. Also, tires are cheaper.

Agreed, that is a LOT of weight, but then no one would really see 20s as a performance upgrade, anyone looking there is all about the looks.

Technically, I would argue 17" is better for the track. LOL A nice lightweight 17, 45 sidewall with a proper suspension for low center and still having travel.

But otherwise, I agree 18s are the high end sweet spot for performance, 19s can be acceptable if they are light enough and it's not a dedicated track/performance car. 20s+? Just vulgar IMHO.

Don't be this guy;
