the whole line thing is a fail- just wait until those modern line cars with Oyster dashes and steering wheels but with black leather arrive and people start thinking "whhaaaaaa?" it's pretty cool to have a black interior with say red or brown or oyster seats and door inserts. it's even okay if the interior were like dark grey with black seats and inserts, but an interior as light in color as oyster with black seats and door inserts.......in the words of lee corso... NOT SO FAST!

These are not the only options! The Lines are only pre-configured trim levels that will be offered for less than if you created the combo yourself. This is how they'll be in stock at a dealer to make buying off the lot easier. There will still be a Standard trim level and you'll be able to order whatever exterior/interior trim combinations and packages/options that you want, just like now.

As we said in our F30 Lines Guide: First and foremost, these lines are not the only 3 cars we can choose from. A 3-Series can be ordered as is and optioned how you want to option it, just as has always been with a BMW. These 3 "Lines" are just extra options on top of what is normally offered. I tend to think of them as just an extra package, akin to a sports package, except that the package contains many more stylistic elements. Another way to think of them would be a pre-packaged BMW Individual car.

Choked that ventilated seats are 100% officially not going to be an option...

From BMW:
Make use of every watt: by charging the battery only when your BMW is braking, coasting or decelerating, Brake Energy Regeneration improves fuel efficiency by up to three percent and ensures that the full power of your engine is available for acceleration. Today's vehicles require much more electrical energy than older models, due to the much wider array of electric and electronic on-board comfort and safety systems. This energy is created by the generator (also known as the alternator) which converts the engine's power output into electricity. In conventional systems, the generator is permanently driven by a belt connected to the engine. BMW's Brake Energy Regeneration operates differently: the generator is activated only when you take your foot from the accelerator or apply the brake. The kinetic energy that would otherwise go to waste is now used efficiently, converted into electricity by the generator and stored in the battery. Producing electricity in this highly efficient way delivers an additional advantage: when you apply the accelerator, the generator is deactivated - so the full power of the engine can be directed to the drive wheels. Brake Energy Regeneration thus increases fuel efficiency while simultaneously enhancing driving dynamics. As a safety precaution, the Brake Energy Regeneration system monitors the level of battery charge and will, if necessary, continue to charge the battery even during acceleration to prevent a complete discharging of the battery. Even more intensive is the use of freed-up kinetic energy in vehicles with electric motors, like the BMW ActiveHybrid models or the BMW ActiveE with fully-electric drive system. In this case, the motor serves as a generator and produces electricity as soon as the driver takes his foot off the accelerator. This principle increases the range of the BMW ActiveE by up to 20 percent. More |

I think that is the key question. If not I suspect that decision is going to leave a bad taste for a lot of the people on this board as the diehards that really want to customize their cars are going to be forced into the slots of the three lines and basically choose which stereotype of lemming they are. I get that it will work and be good for the masses who buy off lots, but my guess is a lot of people on these boards are thinking/hoping for a BMW Individual type experience without the extra cost! Side note... very disappointed that power (and memory) steering column is not an option on the new 3'er. My wife and I like the size of the 3 but would like to have all the luxury features. This is a really nice one for us as my wife is 5'4" and I am 6'1". Ventilated seats would also be nice as a previous poster noted. We just bought a 2011 Cayenne Turbo with this option and they are fantastic!

They should make xenon adaptive headlights standard on all models. That's like one of BMW's signature looks.

it looks like, judging from the auto show pictures, that all of the seats across the lines will have the thigh supports. If that's the case I'll take the luxury line. Looks more classic than the others and I really like the multi-spoke 18's. I'd rather have the matte chrome of the modern line though

I do like what I see though, so I shouldn't be so jaded. ![]() I am especially excited about standard floor mats and upgraded wheel sizes. It shows an adaptation to the times. Good to see, but again, will it be true savings or will the price reflect it? Definitely waiting for the M-sport though, if I don't decide on the 135i. |

I think this is a very smart move. It essentially eliminates cars that are piecemeal styles and gives the sport models they're own designation (M-sport, ///M, etc.). I feel that it gives the owner some "pride," and "ownership" of a specific model the M-sport and ///M owners enjoy so much!
