New to F30 Chassis - what maintenance do I need?

Hi All!

Picked up a 2012 335i RWD automatic today! The 8 speed is brilliant and the N55 is very torquey. Car has 94,000 miles. The car runs great and pulls hard. I love how fast and in-control you are with the 8-speed in Sport+ mode. The transmission really is the crowning characteristic of the car IMO. For the manual guys - I had to get the auto for family reasons. And this was the only transmission that made me, a manual guy, happy to drive. Tires are Pirelli all-seasons with only a 8,000 miles on them and the brakes were serviced by BMW and have alot of meat on the pads.

Options:
-Sapphire Black Metallic
-Dakota Leather Black
-Sport Line
-Adaptive M suspension & steering, sport trans with paddles
-Premium, Tech, & Parking packages

This is not my first BMW and I know these cars are fairly high maintenance vehicles, particularly in their older age. I've had 2 E9x chassis with N54 motors.

So! According to the CarFax this F30 has had the LPFP and valve cover replaced. There is no evidence of the HPFP, water pump, OFHG, or oil pan gasket being replaced. I did inspect the vehicle underneath and the oil pan gasket seems to be weeping, but nothing major.

What maintenance should I perform immediately and what should be done in the short term, and what should I save for in the long term? Are there any TSBs or updates for software recommended?

Immediate
-Engine oil & filter
-Engine & cabin air filters
-Brake fluid

Short term
-Trans fluid & filter
-Plugs & coils

Long term
-Water pump kit
-Oil pan gasket service

I suggest to replace the OEM charge pipe with Evolution Raceworks metal charge pipe as soon as possible. At 94K miles, this would be an immediate task.

Also - inspecting M Adaptive suspension struts for leaks would be the next suggestion.

Awesome car, Congrats! I also have a sport with the red stitch interior + red trim and came from an E90, My car is a 328i Manual but outside of the engine/trans our cars are basically the same.

Im currently at 104k miles and getting ready to refresh the suspension, Dont get me wrong the car makes no noises and feels fine for the most part but struts go bad gradually over time..

So I would look to do the following in the future ( im getting ready to do this myself ) :
  • Struts x4
  • Strut Mounts
  • Control Arm / Thrust Arms
These cars have 4 control arms in the front that BMW calls tension struts and control arms and they are known to go bad.. I had
no idea until last week when I found a mystery quarter sized drop of clear oil on the ground by my front drivers side tire. It wasnt
oil / trans fluid / coolant / brake fluid etc.. When doing research on here it appears to be a common problem and im lucky I made
it to over 100k miles before it happened, One bushing is fluid filled and when it fails it leaks out.

The car still drives fine but it will only get worse, Since I have other project cars that I like to MOD and this is just my daily driver im just going to
do an oem-ish refresh w/Bilstein B4 struts and a fresh set of OEM control arms from FCPEuro.

Id say throw a fresh set of spark-plugs in as well and check on the serp belt/tensioner which prob needs to be changed if they haven't done it already ( did mine at 88k )

*** Another Major one for you ( ZF Trans Service ) BMW Says this has lifetime fluid which is complete BS, ZF has a maint interval ( CHECK INFO BELOW ).

Thanks for the comments! Sounds like I should prioritize the trans fluid and filter change! As for plugs and coils, the engine is very smooth and responsive all the way to redline so I can deprioritize that. I plan on putting a Dinan SportTronic tune to give it just a little more kick once I got all the maintenance taken care of, Iíll be sure to upgrade the charge pipe at the same time!

As for the tensioner, do those fail frequenty? Obviously I would replace the serpentine belt at the same time.

Is intake valve buildup a big issue on the N55 like it was on the N54?

Good choices, Id def do the ZF trans service, Ive never heard of a tensioner failing but if your doing belts its super cheap and your right there. I have an N20 ( pretty much an N55 -2 cylinders ) the carbon build-up is much less than the N54.. At 100K miles it maybe a good idea but to be honest I cant find much supporting info on it and I have not done it myself yet. All the suspension work can be done as you see fit, Its not going to cause any catastrophic failures I just wanted you to be aware . Most importantly enjoy the ride, Ive had the car for 4 years now and it still puts a smile on my face.

1 Oil filter housing (OFH) gasket (IF it's seeping, if not, just drive it)
1 Oil filter cooler gasket (IF it's seeping, if not, just drive it)

2 Replace the coil packs (like somebody said, FCPEuro will be your best friend here)
2 Replace the spark plugs (a bad one will take the other down and apparently some dealers cant find a simple misfire

3 Serpentine belt (esp if the OFH is leaking and gets on the belt)
3 Serpentine belt tensioner (really easy in a video I just watched:
)

4 It's a really fun car to drive for a daily

Maybes
Inspect water pump
White smoke out of the tail pipes will be injectors
Odd idle could be VANOS solenoids, carbon build up, or belt tensioner
If the valve cover gasket is not a hue leak, I would just leave it alone, personally; same with the oil pan gasket.
For whatever reason, I'll use a quart of oil before my next 6k oil change if I use motul, but be fine with BMW oil

No, not near as bad, I just use the spray can carbon cleaner once right before oil changes. I still get over 24mpg in DC rush hour and 29 highway (380-400miles /tank ), and I'm manual and xdrive.

I'm at 107k miles also.

@QUiKSR20

Which arms are you going to get?

Was looking at the TRW set myself.
