Anyone had issues changing key fob battery?

The new owner of my 2015 335d (no comfort access) has been in touch to say the spare key wasn't working - it will start car if held by steering column. I advised battery must be flat. He has now changed it but it still won't unlock the car. Anyone had any problems changing their battery? As far as I'm aware there is no re-initiation needed...

When I handed in my trade-in I pointed out that one of the keys was not operating. The dealer staff simply commented it probably needed a new battery. I said I had intended to buy a battery and fit it. They made no other comment about initialising or whatever.
