BMW F30 328i N20/N26 - Engine replacement

Hello everyone,

I've recently got my BMW F30 328i (2013) N26 and now the engine is damaged. The crankshaft is broken caused probably because of the oil pump. We talked about this a little bit more in this thread. Now I'm going to repair that car. As far as I know, it's better to buy the lower part of the engine (that part where the crankshaft is along with the oil pump, oil bowl etc).

1. My car has the N26 engine. I'm wondering if it's possible to replace that lower part of the engine with N20's one? The N26 engine isn't very popular in Poland and no one is selling it at the moment. Please keep in mind that I'm not going to replace the entire engine, just some part of it.

2. Also, the second thing is that in late 2014/early 2015, timing chain and valve guide issues were redesigned for the n20/26. If I find something interesting, it should be late 2014/early 2015, am I right?

I believe you would be fine using any engine parts from an N20 on your N26.

The only differences are emissions related and nothing internal or physical to the actual engine. Someone please correct me if Im wrong!

Also - if I were going to this extreme and replacing the entire engine I would make certain that it has new timing chain (and components) part numbers. Only way to do that is buy a used motor from 2015 onward vehicle or buy any used engine and all the new part numbers and replace yourself.

Do it right, once.

Also- brand new engines can be had for $6k USD shipped.

sspade , thank you! The point is that I want to do it right. This is the only way it'll be working properly.

I'm wondering what else than the timing chain needs to be replaced? Oil pump? Crankshaft?

The most important question is where can I find new part numbers? How can I make sure that I'm not looking at the wrong, old part number?

You can look up part numbers here:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/select

Timing chain part numbers:
Up to 01/2015 – 11317584084
After 01/2015 – 11318648732

Don’t forget to look up the oil pump chain as well.
