Akebono on M Performance Brakes

Vehicle: 2017 BMW 330i xDrive Sports Wagon (F31)

Current Brakes: BMW M Performance Brake System
370 x 30 mm front
345 x 24 mm rear

As most know, the brake dust with these brakes is something else (especially with gold wheels). I was planning on getting Akebono EURO Ceramics, but read previous threads (older) where they weren't available for these brakes. I sent them an email, with this reply:

Quote:
Thank you for contacting Akebono with your brake pad question. If your vehicle has blue calipers then the correct pads will be EUR1880 front, and EUR1656 for the rear. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.
Are they referring to the same brakes, or the M Sport Brakes?

If different, can someone confirm that Akebono still has no option for these brakes?

If not available, who makes the best street pads (quiet) with low dust for this brake (I've read many threads, but asking specifically for this brake)?

Thanks!

UPDATE: Installed Akebono EURO 1880 (Front) and EURO 1656 (REAR). Happy with Purchase - see post #68 (https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...2&postcount=68)

Should be correct as Msport blue or Mperformance calipers only differ by the carrier allowing for the difference in rotor size.

Should even work for the front Grey brembo as those are the same caliper as the both Msport blue and Mperformance front calipers.

Thanks.

The BMW brake options are quite confusing. I believe you are correct. Worst case scenario, I'll send them back if they are the incorrect size.

I'm subbing to see how this turns out.
I've been getting mixed messages as well.

It looks like those EUR1880's will fit if your VIN has the S2NHA code (I believe 2NH is M Sport Brakes). They should be correct.
I opted for R1 Ceramic pads (much cheaper) for this issue and am pretty happy with them. Only issue is an initial squeal when cold until they warm up with a couple stops. I have heard better things about the Akebono's.

But this is about the M Perf brakes though. And your post is sort of exactly what many dealers and resellers have told me where some of them don't even realize that there IS M perf brake set, and give replies that it will fit the M sport brakes.

That's because the M Perf Brakes and M Sport Brakes are both 370mm and 340mm. The only differences being the caliper color and rotors (drilled/slotted vs blank) and weight of those rotors. Pads and caliper size are the same.

And yet, many manufacturers and dealers of aftermarket pads (Akebono, Hawk, etc) are unsure whether it'd fit or not. Not saying their physical dimensions and specs are not the same. Even when I look up rotors and stuff, it looks to be the same.

For example, if you go here you'll see that for front euro ceramic brake pad set, it says for vehicles with standard brakes (Without M-sport or M-performance), and yet rear Euro ceramic brake pad set says for vehicles without M Performance brakes, but does not mention M Sport brakes.

Or even easier, look at where this post started. It's like that where I would send a message asking if it'd fit M Performance brake kit, and even give them the part number and specifically say that it's yellow and not blue or whatever, still get a reply saying they're not sure or that it'll fit M Sport brakes.

Let's say you ask a manufacturer if the LED headlights would fit in place of Xenons, but they tell you it'd fit in place of halogen, would you take their word and go for it? I mean physically the slots are the same. But the wiring is probably different going from halogen to LED and Xenon to LED.

It's like that. It's kind of frustrating when they are not super clear.

They are not the same rotor dimensions.

The pads fit because they have the same caliper, while the distance the caliper sits from the center of the wheel/axle is different (by way of carrier length)

From what I read here the front brake pads fit across different calipers. The part numbers only differ because of compound. This info might be out of date as I’m not sure if anything changed with the x40 updates.

The VIN search will provide no help, as the brakes I have were added afterwards (to model in link above).

Thanks for the feedback on the R1 pads.

May I know what you get?

I also have M Performance brake and it is about time to replace the pad. I am looking for something that is less noisy and less dusty too.

Thanks!

Certainly. My independent mechanic believes the Akebono pads I listed above should work. I haven't scheduled an installation yet, but will definitely update afterwards.

Looking forward to hearing how these work out, particularly your impression of their initial "bite"

I am getting the R1 ceramic pads to try. Will see if that works.

I ordered M sport package from R1 and got the shipment today. Unfortunately, they send the wrong type. I got non Brembo single piston type of pads instead. Very disappointed!

Update: Called them and the sales associate didn't really attempt to find the correct parts for me. But he did offer me return label. I guess no R1 review....

Their website says these are the proper parts for the blue calipers, there was a set on RockAuto so I ordered them. Not sure when I'll get around to installing them as I'm refinishing a set of blue calipers to put them in so it'll be at least until next year before I install them.

Anyone else install them?

These are supposed to be the correct ones. You actually purchased the last ones on RockAuto, that I was going to purchase today. Great price.

Oops I had been checking RockAuto for a while and never saw them on there before. And yeah they were like half the price of ordering from ECStuning so I just went for it.

I grabbed their last set of front and rear that was in stock 2 weeks ago too. Back on Nov 16, the price was $67.75 for EUR1880 and $60.60 for EUR 1656.

No worries mate.

I wasn't 100% sure the price was for a set (left + right), so I stalled on placing the order.
