NBT iDrive controller with CiC.

During a cyberslacking session at work a couple days ago, I bought one of these:

I was momentarily seduced by its sexy German techie look. My question is, can this be used on a CiC car? My car is a 2012. If I unplug the old iDrive controller from the car, would I get a error code?

Sorry for being a noob with BMW electronic, never had a mod bug but it is here and growing now

*UPDATE 1*
This is NOT a plug-and-play swap

It's not simple like the good ol' days where the CiC controller plugging into the old CCC nav and voila

While here everything physical bolt up perfect, upon installation, as soon as I switch the ignition on, the air con start to turn on and off erratically, and none of the input from the NBT controller works. 15 sec later my mechanical sympathy kicks in and I turn off the car as quickly as I can.

I will continue to seek for solutions and post them here, as I really like this NBT knob. I am such a mod noob haha

ps* no error code so far after this endeavor

Thanks for the bumps, really hope to find a solution to this. I am sure I am not the only one who likes the look of the NBT knob but not ready to dive into a $2000 CiC-to-NBT project

The issue is your Factory iDrive controller and CIC is communicating on KCAN1 bus. Your NBT/ZBE3 (touch iDrive controller) is for KCAN2 bus. You have to do a few wiring mods to get it working.

I had mine installed, was told that a additional wire was needed from CIC to the knob. I got mine installed at a workshop and its working fine, no error thrown.

Hi, interesting topic :-)

Double checking with you gents;

-Overall dimensions and 4pin connector are identical to the 2012 CiC controller.
-Does this retrofit involves more as swapping the original attached K-can lines with new K-can 2 lines taken from our OEM ZGW ?

Or does it needs also a new+code ZGW to have K-can 2 on pins 48-49 ?

Thanks to all for the feedback and/or input on this topic :-)

Cheers !

You can use it on CIC but you will need to splice into the BODY CAN L and BODY CAN H lines on the block connector of your CIC as it uses a different BUS.

The writing functionality won't work but you should be able to use it as a controller knob.

Dear Friend
Thanks a lot for your reply. Is it possible to get step by step instructions or some diagrams to do this job correct?
Best regards

Why would you want the NBT controller on CIC? The touch function won't work anyway. Why not just stick with the smaller CIC knob and make life simple?

the only reason i would want to do this mod is to be able to draw the letters instead of scroll on the wheel. Is there not a scenario with CIC this function would work?

Question, did you buy the knob only or the complete controller? If you only bought the knob, can you indicate the part number? Will like to do the swap, the plastic one is a good choice put if the ceramic one can be bought will prefer to go that direction.

Hello
The only knob can not be fitted to the standard iDrive (CIC), it is a simple solution to install NBT iDrive to CIC system.

Hi, I'm lost with all this CAN L and CAN H. Are those wires? Do you know how to get the schematic?

Check this, it is all clear. But if you have CIC you need adapter to be install.
