Many thanks to anyone that can help.
sorry to hear you have suffered but hopefully nobody was hurt.

just in case you haven't done, maybe PM the OP and he might get an email notification that there is a message for him.

Everyone is fine thanks. My GF was driving with our 4 month old in the car, Physically ok, just a bit traumatised.

I think he must have PM's disabled, can't see how to send one in his profile. Ill try again though.

I haven't contacted BMW yet, but I will be in the next few days. I am trying to get as much info as possible to go to them with. I was a master tech for years so know my stuff when it comes to cars, I went to see the wreck (its in a far worse state than the OP) and from what I know, and can see. It's clearly an electrical fault, short of some kind thats caused the insulation on the wiring loom to catch fire in the whole engine bay. Fuse box is completely disintegrated, which is the same area as flames were first spotted.

Only happened on Monday, so Insurance haven't gotten back to us, but the car is absolutely destroyed so i highly doubt they'll find an exact cause.

I'll keep yous posted though.

that's not good at all, glad your girlfriend and the baby are okay.

the PM option is there, click on his username and it should give you the send private message option (not sure if it is because you are a newbie hence no PM option?!)
the other way I could think of was go through to his Flickr account and send him a message there

all the best in getting this issue resolved

This is quiet worrying. I'm a HGV driver and I've seen 2 car fires in 3 weeks, one on M6 and one on M62 and both were new BMWs and both fires under the bonnet. BMW really should be investigating the cause because there is clearly a problem

Since these were both diesels I have heard of cases where EGR valve gets stuck open and as a result it first burns hole thru intake manifold and then if you do not realize that it can continue to other parts of engine bay.
