I am looking to purchase a pre owned 2018 BMW X3. The car unfortunately does not have CarPlay pre-installed.

Looking at this thread, people are installing CarPlay via coding. I am a noob to BMWs and how this coding works so want to prefer installing via the BMW recommended ConnectedDrive process.

Would I be able to download CarPlay from the BMW ConnectedDrive store? The preowned 2018 BMW X3 has navigation with the big touch screen display on the center dash.

My decision to buy the car depends on whether it has carplay or not, so wanna make sure I understand the compatibility before buying.

F46 Active Tourers use a business nav system, Carplay is a factory order only.

Is that even the latest ones - I have a september 2018 225xe which has ID6 and touch screen but not widescreen, I take it that it is the business nav unit then so car play is out of the question?

Out of interest, is the only difference between the standard and pro nav units on these cars then that the pro nav has the wider screen fitted? If so, is it possible to buy and fit the wider screen and is the touch screen version of the wider screen compatible (I've seen a lot of conflicting info about upgrading the screen saying that you have to get the non touchscreen version to get it to work)?

My 2018 car has just gone into BMW for a software update (engine - 440i). It had carplay installed from wibbles. Unfortunately the car came back with non-functioning Navigation and no carplay. The car has been back to BMW for two days and they cannot get the Nav working. What gives?

For carplay its understandable, the new iLevels will restore the headunit to factory default settings, so you will need to recode it again, but for navigation, what does it say?

Did you also have the lifetime Nav FSC code flashed?

No. The Nav wasn't flashed. It's all a bit bizarre. Car was in for a leaky rear light and they told me that I needed and engine software enhancement.

Now the Nav just shows loading and they can't sort it... I feel that they may end up replacing the HU. Perhaps they haven't got a clue what they are up to...

The Nav was flashed, that is why it's not working.

It can be sorted easily, the headunit does not need to be replaced.

All sorted now thanks. Not going to reinstall Carplay, as I though it was pretty useless apart from the text messaging bit.

Bimmerpost friends - forgive me. I've been reading and re-reading this post and still am a little unsure of what to do re: CarPlay.

Looking at picking up a 2016 F31 (1/16 build date). Car is an odd spec (has track package, but not PDC or Backup camera).

So:
I can code this for full CarPlay if I add the antenna?
Is there anyone in the US that can help with this?

I am new in this forum and would like support. Father has bought X6 (20180 model, received it a month ago) which has navi but surprisingly no airplay option (only mirrorlink for android).
Is it possible to do this USB coding for this version? Also does it require wifi antenna?

I have a 2018 330e with a 6.5 inch screen that has NBT Evo ID6. I have been given conflicting advice on what's needed to enable CarPlay but ultimately it seems that you need nav.

I can install wifi if needed, don't care about touch screen, but not interested in a $2500 project to upgrade the nav. But as far as I can tell, CarPlay doesn't need nav on other cars so I'm wondering if its truly needed on BMW also.

Can someone explain why nav is required for CarPlay?

It's best to check with BMW Connected first. When I ordered mine, the dealer said I'd be able to add it via the store afterwards. When I log on, it's not available for my vehicle. A quick call to Connected and they did a check, confirmed that there was something missing/not fitted to the car during build and as a result I couldn't add the Car Play.

Fortunately it wasn't a deal breaker for me, and thanks to EHB I can still do all I need via the iDrive.

I just upgraded my factory CarPlay to widescreen. I bought it from:

I had to buy a cable for £9.95 also off eBay to use with my laptop as the version in my Nov 18 car was too new to work with a USB. The seller was very helpful as it was my first time doing anything like this.

Ironically, thats the one i've been looked at. Had some commutation with him but eBay wont let me purchase it as I'm a UK customer. Some new HMRC thing they've implemented. Seller said there was no other way to do outside of eBay.

Curious about the lead you mentioned. What set up did you install it on? I was under the impression the USB method was fine except if you had letter evo P onwards?

I managed to get him to accept PayPal direct while eBay is being weird, so literally just done this now. Worked via USB method (I'm on evo O) and took literally 2 mins to do. Looks great. Thanks for your help my friend.
