My CPO is expiring soon and I was wondering what would be a good idea to have dealer check out before warranty expires. They've already replaced timing chain, turbo oil line and steering rack.

Tough to say since my car has been literally bulletproof and no issues cropped up that I could make you aware of. Heck, even the latest diagnosis for the TC came out completely healthy. I suppose you could take it to a reputed indy to see if they can catch any problems with a fine comb, and then take it to your dealership to get those rectified under warranty.

Talking about the TC - was it whining or did they do a preventative relpacement?

What milage did you have the timing chain replaced??

It’s worth getting them to take the undertray off and check for leaks, mines in at the mo having an end of warranty check and they’ve found an oil leak which I didn’t even know was there.

It cant hurt to bring it to a good indy first to give it a good look over before the dealer looks at it. Im in the same boat also and from the reading I've done, below is some of the areas that should be checked.

Oil filter housing gasket
Oil cooler housing gasket
Valve cover gasket
Oil pan gasket
Rear main seal

Basically oil and antifreeze leaks

Yep, get them to check the ac as mine has a condenser leak which I wasn’t even aware of.

I didn't realize you could do this...e.g. bring your car to the dealership and say, hey check it over. Do they charge for this? If so, then that makes sense.

They get paid by BMW to rectify any issues so that's an incentive.

As above, any faults that will be covered by warranty results in a fat juicy payment from BMW head office so they tend to go over the car with a fine tooth comb. They also know all the bulletins and advisories so can target particular areas.

Any dealership I have been in, warranty work is billed at what the mfr estimates the time is, not in actual dealership hours.

In almost every case, it's not a "fat juicy payment", but just stuff they have to do. Not sure how BMW does it, but any N/A dealership would prefer not to do warranty work since they make less than off warranty service.

I have a hard time believing that a dealership would waste their time tossing you car up on the hoist, and going through everything to try to find something they could replace. I have a much easier time believing BMW head office saying "We'll toss you some money if you don't look too hard" instead. If it breaks off warranty, you are still going to pay to get it fixed. Just your pocket, not theirs.....

Not sure, about the fat juicy payment, but they still get paid a reasonable amount and any amount is better than 0.

Also, contrary to what people keep posting on these boards, I don't think BMW or any other car manufacturer is looking for any/every opportunity to stiff their customers. None of them would be keen to risk their long-term reputation for short-term minor savings such as warranty work.

Final point, if it breaks off warranty, what makes you think people will necessarily go to the dealership to get it fixed? I don't, and I know many other people on here don't as well. I go to a trusted indy instead. So that argument doesn't hold much water.

@Wires if hat were entirely true then there’d be no such thing as good will gestures that many people get for out of warranty repairs.

The oil level sensor was replaced under CPO for me. It was leaking.

Just picked up my car from dealer. They inspected everything and replaced two ignition coils, blower motor and regulator, and I had a leaking oil pan gasket so they replaced that as well. I was kind of surprised that they get 4 hours to replace oil pan gasket. Total cost, my CPO copay, $50.00.

I just took mine in before it expires. They changed a few gaskets and completely changed the front suspension mounts and both struts as well.

I tried to get my dealer to do a quick look see about 2 weeks ago, my warranty expired yesterday. They wouldn't do it and then told me not to worry, they are price competitive with the local indies, so I asked them what a new set of brakes would cost and they gave me an estimate (of course my luck I will need brakes about 4k Miles after maintenance ends ) Then I rolled down the street to one of the Indy shops and asked for an estimate.

Part prices were the same, but the Indy wanted almost 50% less in labor costs.

Dealer's loss I guess. The dealer doesn't even have a competitive advantage with loaners, a lot of the local Indy shops have partnerships with local rental agencies and with the money saved for the work I'm fine spending $30-40 for a rental for the day that I can pick up and drop off at the shop

My car went in last week and what they found and have done to my car has transformed it. It no longer lurches when in stop/start mode, my interior no longer rattles and squeaks and the car also sounds louder when I put my foot down.

Good will gestures builds a trust bond with the dealership, and the customer is more likely to do more work, or buy a new vehicle there. I've had a dealership that wouldn't honor warranty work (I don't shop there anymore), and other ones that took care of it even though it was just off warranty (still shop there).

At General Motors, their warranty work gets paid out at about 0.7x what the dealership needs to do the work. They'd prefer not to do the work, wait for the warranty to expire, so they can bill their actual rate on repairs.

I've yet to have the BMW dealership go out of their way to fix stuff. Once it's proven defective, they take care of it. But, they don't just jump in to get this "fat juicy paycheck".

If a dealership is going out of their way booking through warranty work, and they are the only one, BMW corporate will be tagging them, which will end with a slap on the wrist.

Hello newbie here. I had a rear differential input shaft seal leak and transmission cover leak at 50,000 km. Even though the warranty goes to 80,000km, my 4 years expired last Dec. Don't expect the BMW dealer to be forthcoming about any leaks. Get under the car and look for yourself.
