They are both C Class so it would be utterly arbitrary not to report them as such.

Sure, the 4 is technically a 3 Coupe. But then lots of automobiles are technically relatives of others; that doesn't mean they must be combined. I don't see the inconsistency here. For example a quick google search shows combined a4/5 sales were approx 30,000. If I recall correctly BMW sells as many X5s as that.

I agree. If you strip out the 4 series then the 3 series is no longer the top seller. And also if you include 3/4 together then you gotta do the same for the c-class sedan/coupe and its not clear from the list whether or not the c-class numbers include the coupe. Same would apply for A4/A5 (which may break top 10 if done that way?).

No need to attack you. As you rightfully said Acura and Lexus are also luxury cars. If you look at the list they are also included. So in essence you are stating the obvious really.

On a side note does stating that you have an M3 make your opinion weigh in more than say someone with a civic? It's just weird to me

The inconsistency is really quite blatant. The 3 and 4 are listed as one category for the US while the 5 is listed alone instead of combined with the 6. Additionally, the Canadian figure for the 3 does not include (or at least make mention of) the 4.

We can come up with all sorts of plausible reasons for the inconsistency, but by definition it is inconsistency nevertheless.

There is no universally accepted definition for a luxury car so yours is fair game. However, in the interest of being able to communicate effectively with others on the topic without coming off as obtuse or difficult I'm not sure how practical a definition it is. But if you believe strongly in it, by all means carry that torch with pride.

Fair point but if we examine the data:

3/4 series, compared with MB C Class (includes both sedan and coupe), compared with Infiniti G models (includes both sedan and coupe).

MB E class (no coupe) compared with 5 series (excludes 6 as this a coupe).

The data is comparing across different manufacturers but I think it has to make sense when comparing cars in the same segment (3/4 vs C class vs Infiniti G for example)

Unfortunately I was being US centric and I had not considered the Canada data

Have you actually sat in one of the latest lexus models? They cost much less than a 328/335, have a lot more features, and dont feel as cheap. The entry level BMWs (non M package/non M models) feel cheap all around from the seats to dashboard to steering wheel or back seats.

5 series and E class are what luxury is all about. 3 series gives you the bmw badge that an average person cannot afford with the 70-90k 5 series cars.

There is nothing wrong or offensive with what i said. If i were wrong, 5 series would just be a larger 3 series nothing more, but its not now is it?

I think the moderator, who also has an M3 put it eloquently.

Nope. Sorry. The sales reported are completed retail sales to end consumers.

As to why the 3er & 4er are reported together the reason has been stated in the thread multiple times. For those who think the way the 5er and 6er are reported makes the 3er/4er reporting inconsistent you need to educate yourselves on those two cars. The 6er has always been a very distinctive design completely apart from the 5er, not merely a two door version of the 5er. It's really not a complicated concept.

That is correct, and has been the case since 2010. BMW was the winner before that.

I think if BMW Canada had a better website... compare it to the Mercedes-Benz Canada site and I'm not surprised they are doing better. I almost gave up on BMW after I went on their site and it required Java just to see the prices. And not only that, but I had to use a different browser and jump through hoops to get it to work. And after it worked and finally didn't crash one time, there was no way to see financing or leasing payment estimation. I think now you can do it, but it's unintuitive and a mess. I find myself browsing the MB site just for fun because it's just "fun" to use.
