i asked BMW brookvale. $80 for the part.

they wanted to assess the car first however and claimed that they had done the kit on a car before and it wasn't successful which ended up in a steering rack replacement. sounded like revenue generating to me to be honest.

i advised them that they should be covering it outside the warranty period given its documented every where and a repair kit being created. my car has 42000km and 4 years old so its not like its had a hard life. this was met with "we'd have to assess".

also i dont know if everyone has found the video on youtube how to diagnose whether you need the kit or not.

basically with the car off turn the steering wheel left and right and you'll be able to recreate the knock.

The box in the picture has the part number on it. I believe at this juncture you can only order from BMW

Hi,
To help people in UK I have just bought the kit from a dealer (Chesterfield) for £19.60 + VAT, much cheaper than online + postage.

Just need to get it fitted now in my 435d, will go to local BMW specialist rather than do myself. I will post the outcome as I have the knocking bad when ignition off and slight when on + knocking noise over speed humps which is most annoying, if it fixes this it will be great.

the thrust repair piece supposedly fixes the issue. althou the labor is not quick or simply, here's a link [https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...nit/1Vnc3X9PQZ] so you can have an idea of what needs to be done, and hope that your indy BMW specialist has the BMW special tool needed to perform the repair. Good luck and let us know.

Keep in mind that success is not guaranteed. Some racks are so worn that they cannot be adjusted into spec, requiring full replacement.

Hi,

Did you get this fixed in the end? If so do you mind advising the labour cost?

Seems that the "special tool" required is part of a kit including a measuring device so costs $$$ - I assume only a dealer would have this tool. However I've asked my local shop if they can do it - waiting to get a response.

As previously mentioned the part ranges from $80-100 depending on your bmw dealer (I got mine for about half from the US). There are a range of special tools required depending on how professionally you want to do this. The basic removal/install tool you can get on eBay from the UK but its not cheap with the shipping (approx $70).

I was fortunate and my local indy mechanic in Canberra had all the specialist gear required. It was $440 of labour. They also did a wheel alignment afterwards (unsure if necessary).

Hi, Thanks for that. I did get an indy quote in Sydney for coincidentally the same price. They said they had the special tools to set/measure the fitment. I wanted to see what the dealer would charge and have so far made 6 calls to two different dealers, still waiting for a quote!

The wheel alignment after sounds like a reasonable precaution.

i was quoted $130 for the work but local workshop wont take part , they want to supply and fit ...

I think the measure tool is for VSS variant but i have convinced one workshop to do without measure tool will see how that goes .

By the book, the tools required are more than just this socket adapter. The official toolkit contains several components including an electronic measuring device to calibrate the "play" in the rack with the tie-rods disconnected. Somebody above posted what looks like the workshop procedure document which is very informative.

I meant this "electronic measuring device" , any who , Part was replaced and I am extremely happy . i am not too sure about the Play bit in the rack and tie-rods . I dont think it was done but i had a 550 KM country round trip and i was very satisfied the way car handleled and 0 knocking.

Insert "just Do it" if you have been thinking about it , try to get it done from specialist workshop who has the measuring tool as well.

My local mechanic advised that Active Power Steering would do it after he spoke with them. I have not got around to doing it yet though.
