Pond Fish Removal

We’re hopefully moving house soon and the people buying our house want to fill our pond in and have asked me to make sure the pond is empty of fish.

It’s a real long shot, but has anyone ever found a business willing to take away fish? We’ve got a couple of foot long carp and quite a few big goldfish.

I’ve tried looking online, there’s a few bits and pieces, but not much on it.

I’ve tried people I know, but no one has a big enough pond to add our fish to the ones they’ve already got. Plus, I inherited the pond and fish when we bought the house, I want someone that’s not me to catch them and take them away.

I suspect this might be the shortest thread ever, but thought I’d give it a try.

Hate to say it but local Facebook may be your friend, normally someone who will take them as they are pricey to buy in the first place....

I just need to make it clear that they need to take them all, and not just pick a few they like. What they do after with them I don’t want to know

+1 for the local aquatics center or larger garden center.

Thanks guys, I’ll give them a try. I read somewhere that shops might be reluctant to take them as they can’t be sure they don’t have any diseases etc.

But rather than being put off by that online, I could just call and find out for myself.

When we moved into our house the previous owner had a 20ft pond with shit loads of massive Koi and other fish that we wanted to get rid of to basically fill the pond in.

Rung around various aquatics locally and managed to find one who would take them, they supplied the bags to transport the fish in.

Not surprised, Koi are worth a mint, especially the bigger ones!!

Not all are apparently, there's various types with some worth more than others.

Probably like a car, at trade-in time it turns out that your Koi is the wrong spec, colour and propulsion. Sadly worthless, but we'll take it off your hands guv.

On last BBQ Alex.

You know it.
I know it.

Just don't let the kids know it.

I just want someone else to come fish them out and do whatever they like with them.

Got a pond grid thingy on top to stop kids drowning in it, that needs removing, then fish catching and then they need to be gone.

I’d rather someone else did it all for me!

Nope, nope, nope. People here started dumping their spare goldfish and pet turtles in the ponds at a local wildlife range. In the end the wildlife folks drained two of the three ponds entirely and concrete lined the third. Used to be the perfect place to see all manner of dragonflies, damselflies, lizards and snakes, but between the public and the federal government, the stupid humans fucked it up.

I won’t be doing that, don’t worry.

Hmm seems a little OTT? I know too many fish could upset the Eco system...but I'm fairly sure concreting over it isn't great too.

My favourites are the stories about how this happens from a single pet flush....

I love looking at fish. Your fish sound like they are long term inhabitants might they have tenancy rights . Would be a shame if they were harmed.
ps my tank Need to rehome some of those baby yellow labs and red zebras(there are about 30 of them hidden in the rock work you can see a few in the pic) once they grow.

I wish that I could leave them. Most of them were here when we arrived and I was really disappointed that the new buyers didn’t want them. I tried a little bit to talk to them about it, but didn’t want to put them off buying the house either.

New house not got a pond and no obvious place to put one.

Hope move is going OK Alex, saw a headline today that said it was taking 8 months for moves to complete because of the virus, the boom in sales caused by stamp duty holiday etc.... Clearly as a headline it will have limited references to facts but it made me look....

Thanks, doesn’t look like that at the moment with ours. We put ours up for sale mid November, sold two weeks later and still looking to move in late February or March. Fingers crossed though as there are a few in the chain.

But last update I had was that all mortgage offers were confirmed and in place, just 2 local searches due by the end of the month for 2 of the properties.

My mortgage with the Nationwide was confirmed really quickly. First conversation and offer on the 10th of December, valuation carried out on the 18th and back with the Nationwide same day, mortgage offer received a couple of days after that.

Solicitors all seem to be acting quickly, enquires sent by one solicitor to another and through to us same day.

I never trust them to act quickly anyway in normal times, so I keep in contact to make sure we don’t get pushed to the bottom of the pile.

the big challenge is selling house moving etc. Rehousing fish hopefully is a smaller challenge. There may be local fish stores (not the glitzy ones)who may be able to advise.
