New owner here

Hey guys,

I was searching for a place that is similar to vwvortex. I’m picking up a 2014 328i xdrive sportline tomorrow!! 23k km. Super excited. I’m picking up st pfaff bmw.

I should’ve asked this first before buying.... is there any major scary issues I should be worried about. I’m getting the extended warranty as well.

Thx guys...

I've the exact same car as you with 100k on the clock. No issues to report. All I can say is hold on, and enjoy! You should come to the meet on Thursday night

You should see my post a couple down about the meet up.

I would get the warranty anyway just because you never know but I never took on a warranty and I've spent less than what I would of for a year long warranty.

I would ask how much life is left in the brakes but I can't think of anything else. The sport seats and suspension is great - you'll love it.

The N20 is overall a pretty solid engine, but it does have known issues with timing chain, guide and tensioner. There are multiple reports on this forum of blown engines due to timing chain snapping (or the guide disintegrating). See this for example: http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1089085

2015/2016, BMW made some changes to the chain/guide/tensioner that supposedly addressed these issues (BMWNA actually extended the warranties for timing chain, but doesn't apply to BMWCA).

How common is this issue? Hard to say, it does happen, but probably not as common as what the forums would make you believe.

EDIT: good news is that there is a high pitched whine/squeal from the timing chain when things are about to go wrong, which should allow you to take it to a shop and get it fixed before catastrophic failure.

Lol... I actually did this

This sounds so familiar.... sounds like my old mk3 vr6! Plastic rails...tick tick tick tick...

Do you know if this is covered under the comprehensive warranty ?
I need to sort out the warranty tomorrow morning.

Also, they even have warranty for the run flats. I’m thinking of not getting the warranty for runflats, and switching them to reg tires ones they go.

Thanks for the info guys

How'd you manage to find a 328 thats been driven under 3,500 miles per year since new?

Hopefully you arent paying more than $25k CND for the vehicle... if you are, I suggest you reevaluate!

I dunno dude maybe pfaff bmw replaced the odometer with a newer one. Maybe the 1 owner of the vehicle chose to drive 3 months of the year...

And as far as spending more than $25k... you do realize this is Canada. We don’t get the same cheap deals as you guys down south.

Either way I’m happy AF! Def getting the extended warranty!!

I dont think Pfaff would waste their time doing that on a 328 considering the caliber of vehicles they sell. Anyways... hopefully you didnt pay too much for that Pfaff license plate bracket!

No doubt, they bent you over the barrel... offering you a warranty on your RFTs ?!?

They will warranty anything, so long as your signature is on the line. That vehicle is worth $20k max in the states. $25k CND was a modest number, considering the currency exchange.

Very familiar with Pfaff. Lived in Ontario for 11 years. Quality, well respected dealer. Not debating that.

Yea lol they truly did offer every possible warranty. They even offered extended warranty for electronics! I’m not taking the tire warranty however, just reading on timing chain has made me really put questions in my head! And I’ll definitely take the warranty that covers timing chains and turbos.

The average cost of a 328i hat year and newer with approx 60k and less is closer to $30-$34k. Depending on what is avail within that particular 328i!

And bahahah on the plate comment!!! As they literally try to sell me this!! I did buy the black grilles off of them though. The chrome had to go..

Sorry guys forgot to add pics. I’ve already swapped out the chrome grill for the black one and just got ceramic tints put in.

I’ve had it for about a week now. I freakin love it!!! The handling is insane and the sport mode is amazing! The sound. So fun.

I’m planning on powder coating these rims to gloss black! I also love the 19’s It came with.

I just have to learn how to wash without swirling the paint!

It's Canada.

If you get that car for $25K, that's a fucking steal up here with that odometer reading. Get it tuned once you get it and upgraded the standard you'll be asking about sooner than later, lol (eg. replace your chargepipe, intercooler to take advantage of your tune and even upgrade the downpipe and exhaust if you want).

Most of all, enjoy that car, bub.

I hope I didn't scare y'all about the timing chain! If I had to guess, I would say that it probably doesn't affect as much as the forums would indicate. The amount of N20/N26 out there are quite a bit more than the N55 and if it was such a major issue, I would expect to see a lot more complaints (not on forums, but across media sites). Like I said in my previous post, just be on lookout for the high pitch squeal and take it in if that happens (you can google the sound, as it 's quite distinctive).

Have fun and enjoy your car! I had my 328i in the shop for a few days (fuel pump issues) and was driving a 2017 ecoboost mustang, and I am happy to have my own car back (the mustang was pretty decent though!)

I drove a Dodge Challenger in the US 2 weeks ago and was thrilled to get out of it and back into my thing. That Challenger was literally lifeless. Waste of money
