Installing Radiator Guards on B58 equipped vehicles (US)

My 2017 440i GC was built in July 2016, before BMW made a production change in December 2017 to add radiator guards as a standard feature.

There are several threads already discussing this problem.

I wanted to start a new discussion to consolidate the feedback from US based forum members.

My notes :

1. Visited my local BMW dealer in SoCal
2. Shop foreman / SA inspected the vehicle to assess potential labor charges
3. Parts department finally received a list of all the parts from BMW NA
4. Quote is being prepared

Attached - a diagram showing radiator guard parts.

I have a 2017 340i that did not come with guards.

My rad did get a puncture and BMW Canada did try to add guards on my car for the repair. Unfortunately when the parts arrived it didn't fit they said because my variant had the smaller engine rad on top.

So I'm still in the process of fitting a mesh grille myself.

Take a look under the bumper. The radiator is fairly close. The guards - if installed - will be easily recognized.

B58 engine is still the same engine, whether in the US or Canada. Did the dealer order the right parts? The parts in my order took 2 weeks to verify. BMW AG (in Germany) was also involved in the process.

That's what I thought too then I went to the dealer and saw the difference in the 3 series and 4 series models.

My dealer tried their best after keeping the car for 5 weeks coordinating with Germany.

Unfortunately my model can't be fitted with rock guards at all. Looks like your 440i will though.

Look at the diagram you can see the difference:

I paid $2700 for the repairs

The guard applies to 3 series LCI also. The dealer installed these for free? I would think they should have come installed from the factory!

@gsehgal29 Thanks for sharing the service details. What vehicle do you have? The notes indicates that your vehicle has an auxiliary cooler in front of the radiator.

Those are two totally different diagrams. Also, you’re looking at model year 2017, so it’s not going to show you rock guards at all.

Apples to apples: 330xi sedan vs. 440xi GC. You’ll see that they’re both the same.

A couple of notes:
  • If the car has the M Sport package, automatic transmission, and in the case of the 4 series, M Sport brakes, it’ll have an additional small radiator at the front of the stack. (All 4-series GC are automatic, so you don’t see that constraint on its parts diagram.) In this case, there’s only one rock guard panel instead of two. The small radiator takes the place of the bottom rock guard.
  • The rock guard can only be fitted if the updated radiator mounts are used. This is part 3 in the diagrams.
I don’t doubt that the dealer wasn’t able to make any of this work on your car, despite involving Germany. But these cars are rolling out of the factory today with rock guards installed, and at some point, it really just becomes a question of how many other parts need to be updated to make things fit.

cfm56d7b, how did you fare?

I opened a case with BMW NA requesting the installation of rock guards as a courtesy under warranty. My local dealer already received a list of parts confirmed by BMW AG (Germany).

Will update this thread once BMW NA responds.

It looks like they [guards] were only introduced in December of 2017 [!]
