420i xDrive -advice on purchasing
I was looking to buy 328i , which was the car I have driven for couple of days with which I was impressed with the overall feel and performance of the car. Then the issues and stories about the timing chain issues started to happen and i was kind pushed away from purchasing 2.8i.
I have missed couple of deals for low mileage 328i (2012 and 2013) with the price of 20000 EUR but was hesitating due to above mentioned N20 issues and the age of the car. I was looking at some diesel options 425d and 325d but never made a purchase. I am now looking at F32 420i xDrive 2015 with 45000 km with the price of around 20000 EUR with N20 engine again but it should have revisit timing chain as production date is October 2015. The car has nice specs, Mineral grey colour, M sport package, Alcantara seats, Reverse camera, Navi pro, Hifi ,Adaptive LED headlights, 18 Aloy wheels. The only thing visually i do not like is the absence of shadowline trim as the car has chrome window trim OEM is more then 1000 eur to replace ) The biggest drawback is the engine as i think the car would feel underpowered even to 325i E46 i used to drive (which is on the paper faster car) and not to 328i Maybe i can resolve this with remap (Bm3 stage1 ) but i am not a big fan of paying 20.000 EUR and then doing the remap and stress the engine but i guess that is the only option if i buy the car. If i would ask myself the question if this is the car i was waiting for , probably i would answer no, but having in mind that the alternatives 428i and 430 or 330i 2016 are above 26000 eur with low mileage, left me thinking what to do? I think you have answered your own question. Keep looking. Also, if you buy late in 2020 the car will depreciate and the price will be more affordable. If you can also save some money while you wait, then you can better afford a car that meets your preferences. If you can wait to buy a car that could be a better option for you.

Just wait for the right car, after being in 328 the 420 will feel under-powered and you will regret buying it, will be too late then. Also, N20 will probably be over-stressed with a tune. Be patient and do it right the first time. Good luck.

Can only repeat what has already been said - if you already now hesitate about the engine power, chances are it will appear even more under-powered when you own it.
Buy the engine you feel is sufficient or higher. Wait for the right one to come around. But also do not forget that the engine is by far not everything! Whichever engine you buy - you will get used to. Make sure there are sufficient options in the car to entertain you once this happens.

Thanks for the reply, they sound reasonable. But the problems is that equivalent car with more power and same equipment and mileage is around 8-9000 Eur which is a bit beyond my budget. So it looks like i would need to sacrifice something as wait would be longer if i don’t. That is why i was maybe thinking getting this and remap it.
