Looking at buying a 328xi

Hi guys, currently looking for a 328xi 2013-2014 in PA area as I recently drove one and feels like such an upgrade from my 08 328i. The dealership I'm going to is asking about $13,500 for around 89ish thousand miles, they have 2 on the lot currently so I'm sure I can knock some off the price. They offered me a warranty as well which I've had before and has saved me major bills on my e90 so I'd grab that for 2 grand. What should I look for when browsing for one? Test drive one and it felt great but what goes bad quickly or at 100,000?

skip it.

if you're looking for a 4cyl F30, find a B46(B48) engine.

Ask if one of them has had the timing chain replaced/upgraded and pick that one.

I wouldn't spend that kind of $$ on a car with 89K miles.

That's a high price for an older car with high enough miles! Obviously it's your money so do as you please.

You're being ripped off, nobody would even consider it for that mileage for that price.

It’s eye popping what US dealers are asking for used models during the pandemic/due to the pandemic. I was looking at a BMW dealer’s inventory just across the border in NY and they’re asking US$28,000 while a local dealer is asking CAD$26,000 for same model with nearly identical mileage. That’s quite the difference.

Early N20/26 motors are susceptible to timing chain guide issues. Not all of them, but enough that BMW has taken notice and to have inspired a class action lawsuit. The issue was reportedly rectified with March 2015 production.

If your budget allows I would recommend looking at 2016 328i’s or 2017/2018 330i’s.

Wow, I never thought the difference was that stark! We're getting ripped off here in the US

Pretty much agreed, but I’m still glad we have a free market system, supply and demand. And I say this as someone who just made a deal on a CPO BMW.

I got a good deal too back in November.
We aren't the only country out there with a free market system. All developed countries have free markets that are susceptible to supply and demand shocks

I've heard that about the used market being insane right now...and it makes sense what with all the stimulus checks going out, makes that down payment a lot easier for some.

But, I bought my 330i xDrive back in January for an absolutely killer deal. Only reason I can think of is that it is AWD, which is generally useless here in the south. Originally in Connecticut, my car ended up for sale in Atlanta, GA somehow. Ended up being great for me, though, kayaking and other outdoor stuff I enjoy doing occasionally make me very glad I have the added traction.

With that in mind to the OP, have you considered shopping virtually at other nationwide dealers? I imagine AWD comes at a premium up north, you could probably find a much better deal finding one in stock at a place that doesn't really need it.

Likewise for me - same model purchased at the same time. In my case I also didn’t require AWD but the low mileage and previous senior owner were too completing to ignore. Enjoy yours.

I wish I could find a cheaper deal but I can't in my area. This is the best I really could find with a warranty in stock.

Damn and I thought I was getting a good deal! I can't find any in area that aren't over that price, where a BMW dealership near me is asking 10,900 for a 320i 2013 with 104k miles! I figured the f30s have better reliability

I think the car you’re looking at is not necessarily a bad deal. If you wanna post a link to it we can take a look and let you know if we see any red flags.

Appreciate that! Here's a few I was looking at. I believe they sold the one I wanted but here are a few from the same dealership that offered me a warranty that saved me from expensive bills for my e90 328. I know from sterling I can take a 4 year contract cars warranty. I don't know how reliable the f30s seem, when I test drove one the guy told me that they are less problematic than the e90s.

I did a quick search on CarGurus and a lot of inventory is pricy. But there were a couple deals so have a look there. Also, is the price with a 3/4 year warranty or is that on top? Because if it's extra, then you can save money on it too.

It's extra, it's about $2,000 for the warranty for 4 years i think. it's through contract cars, which IMO isn't the best but it saves with these cars. Saved me over $4,000 worth of work on my older 328

Personally, I like the silver one at I-Deal best. https://www.idealcars2.com/details/u...eries/72420350 Being a one owner with no accidents is always good. From the CarFax it looks like it was mostly maintained at the BMW dealer. I wonder if Sterling would sell you a warranty even if you don’t buy from them.

Are you going to finance? Pentagon FCU is an excellent credit union. Anyone can join. https://www.penfed.org/auto They also offer an extended warranty - https://www.penfed.org/auto/extended-warranty

You can use www.bimmer.work to check what equipment a car has.

None of the warranties seemed to last past 100,000? Was a bit confused. I should call sterling and ask but I think it's contracted out to them. I should go to take the silver one for a test drive just don't know if I can get the price down lower. So scared of buying a 10k tank that's gonna sit bc it keeps breaking. I know BMW isn't made for reliability but it's too much to give up

I agree, you should at least check out the silver one. I’m sure that dealership sells extended warranties, too. The PenFed warranty that would apply to this car is 36 months/36k mile so it would last until 130,692 miles.
