Hey guys a quick question on the catless downpipes. How bad is the smell? I've heard that you can clearly smell burning oil going catless. Thoughts? experience?

Not bad at all in my experience. Only smell it outside the car or at a stop with windows down.

On my n26 i took off the secondary cat, and it smells like rotten eggs now, not the most pleasant smell but bearable, problem is now I'm hesitant to go full on catless, fearing this rotten egg smell will gain a ton of strength. Also, it might be a sign of a failing cat, so might have to go catless regardless .

Catless n20 here. Its fine. There is zero rotten egg smell. You can only smell unburned gas fumes when you put your face right up to the exhaust tip, or just barely if the wind is blowing just right. Seriously I don't know why people are making this an issue lol.

I 'm getting a custom fabricated catless downpipe, the total cost including install is half of what any branded downpipe would cost. I mean, it's just a 4" plumbing pipe, I don't think any brand makes a difference in performance, a fabricated one will have the fittings and size identical to the OEM, so it's going to fit.

I'm not sure what you mean by "its just a 4" plumbing pipe", but in reality the entrance is a v-band with a 3.63" inner diameter and it needs to be extremely true/precise or it will leak at the turbo. Then it needs to gradually reduce to a 2.25" inner diameter and be curved exactly right in order to slip into the catback exhaust. Plus the bracket needs to be in exactly the right spot to bolt up. Also you are going to want to incorporate a high quality flex pipe in there somewhere, which will cost close to a hundred dollars on its own. I think you are underestimating this greatly and you are going to be in for some surprises if you actually go through with this.

I agree with CandyRedRC46. It's a bit more intricate of a piece than you're making it sound. It's a tight fit at the turbo, and it has to be just right for that clamp to fit. I also recommend a flex portion so you're not putting all that stress on the turbo and manifold when the exhaust suspension gives a bit over bumps. A custom job can certainly be done if that's the route you want to go, but I don't want you to think any old metal worker can whip one up no problem

Well, the fitting isn't an issue because its being welded on. I went to the shop and they quoted me $250CAD ($185USD) for fabrication and install so to me it was a no brainer

You have a point for the flex portion removed, I'll ask them if they can cut that off the OEM and weld it on

Its going to be interesting to hear how they connect the turbo side without the proper fitting and clamp. The other side is just pipe to pipe and can easily be welded together...

I dont believe they will weld the pipe directly to the turbo... and if they are planning that - I wouldnt let them...

The two main reasons for a properly engineered aftermarket pipe are the TURBO SIDE connection and the flex-pipe portion. But in the end... it is just a hollow pipe.

I think the plan is to cut the pre-cat and cat only (the 4" big can), and keep all the connection fittings and O2 ports. But thanks to you guys, I'll make sure the flex vibration isolator stays as well.

So you're basically just chopping up and rewelding the factory down pipe? How would this be any different or better than simply gutting the cat?

Sounds like basically a more professional/refined way of gutting the cat.

Should just get the Circuit Werks downpipe. I had it for years till I went custom turbo. No issues and fitment was great. Pipe is a pipe! No need to spend loads of money on it.

My N20 features the stock downpipes with the screwdriver smash mod.

Works fantastic and was free.
