I definitely learned a lot about the changing design of things like the exhaust manifold and also the radiator inside the intake as well as the way that the variable valve timing works to activate the intake cam.

these days with turbo cars... it seems manufacturers are making these sorts of design changes to limit aftermarket modifications from damaging the stock motor. Another example is factory charge pipes made of plastic or rubber that will fail before they hold high boost..
You think they care about the aftermarket? Or us?? Lol. Nope

nobody needs this kind of negativity in their lives..
Not negative at all, just being real my man. BMW is fucking "ehhhhhh" now. The idiots buying them now are only trying to portray a level of social status to a group of folks that they don't know.

I think they are protecting their cars .. particularly lease models that will be sold to another person in the future.

That's my point. They are designing in failure items to protect the car from being modified.

It's a lot easier to NOT have a warranty claim when the motor can't develop enough boost because of a charge pipe that's a designed failure point.

Now they have designed a way to also cool and comfort the intake charge with an internal radiator in the intake and additional controls.

I think the few of us that do our own work are very excited about the Supra for this very reason. Besides Bryan_KiesMotorsports it seems like no one is willing to do proper DIY and walkaround vids on modern BMWs. If we had more literature it would help at least. But the Supra attention is the primary way we'll get more details on aftermarket development and operation in the OEM. Because they know that toyota loyalists demand that level of transparency.

No. They are not designing parts to fail when tuned. They simply are not being paid to make equipment that can withstand 200% of the engine's stock output. And more often than not, they don't get enough warranty claims to put money on redesigning components vs investing in new tech and features that sell cars.

Again, nothing to do with stopping people from tuning their cars. If anything the DME protection is just that - protecting their investment in tuning the car's operation so it can't just be reverse engineered.

I heard this too. another internet lie like the m235i's dry sump.

I'm glad to finally confirm it though. been wondering.

B58TU in the Z4 and M340i has the timing chain moved to the front. Not the B58.

pretty sure the the motor Papadakis pulled apart was a TU. it's got a two piece timing chain instead of 3 like the original B58. it's layout also looks like the TU's per BMW's B58TU technical training PDF that's been floating around the forums.

How is your stupid-named toyota engine better, then bmw M88 engine, which was built 35 years ago?
Im struggling to understand your excitment about this piece of history today in 2019. Considering the fact, than bmw was long before toyota in this game.

I think you already know the reasons why. The 2JZ has proven itself, over and over again. There is no denying it.
The M88 was a great motor for it’s time. However the 2JZ is still being used by tuners to make reliable and high horsepower, well after 10 years of being discontinued.

Closer to 440i or M4?

Thanks for the video.
Does anyone know if this B58 break down is identical to a 440i B58 engine build, oil coolant, forged parts, and variable crankshaft, etc?

There are some differences, there is a document which out lines them but off the top of my head the main ones are;

-different head with integrated exhaust manifold with only two ports
-different HPFP
-different timing chain set up

I loved the video, but am disappointed by the number of comments that complain about BMW doing some things differently.

Timing chain at the back, for example, if they have got the design and build of that chain done correctly, then it will last as long as the rest of the engine, people seem to think that chains always used to fail so for all eternity they must be made easily accessible for when they fail. What if they don't fail, why would we care where they are?

Exhaust manifold in the head, heats up the engine quicker, allows control of underbonnet temperatures, shortens the distance from exhaust valves to turbo so gives better response. And the downside is that people used to put in big external manifolds to give more power, what if that isn't needed when the path from valves to turbo is so short?

Sorry for the rant, I implement new IT systems, and often encounter people that just hate change so fight against anything different, and want to do things in the old way because of issues that aren't there anymore.
