Rear main oil leak?? 2017 340i
Hi everyone,
Noob here.. We have been on the lookout for a red 340i but they are hard to find with all the options we are looking for.. We ran across this 2017 340i Estoril Blue with red interior and only 9,000 miles. It has everything, led package, adapative lights, M-Sport, Track Handling, heated front/rear seats, all electronic options... So we snagged it here in Atlanta. The car was traded in on a new Genesis G70 and we couldn't for the life of us figure out why. Anyway... Today I did my first oil change with the ECS package of BMW 0W-20, BMW oil filter, new BMW plug and seal. While I'm under the car I decide to check out the rest of the underside. I removed all the panels and see what appears to be a small oil leak, I would say the rear main seal. Could that really possibly be on a car that only has 9,000 miles?? Any input is appreciated. phillip [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] |

Your car should still be under factory warranty. Take it to the dealer. Also keep your receipts of the oil you used if you still have them. It will help if they try to deny warranty on you doing your own oil change, I doubt they will do that though. Previous owner might not have known because he also could've just taken it to the dealer under warranty.

Oil leaks can be deceiving. If you're determined to do it yourself, clean everything off with some engine cleaner then re-inspect after a thousand miles. Check higher up, it could be leaking from almost anywhere.

Yep, still under warranty! It was a CPO car from United BMW here in Atlanta before we got it. I did clean it good and will watch it over the next 1,000 miles... I will definitely take my ass to the dealer and let them check it!

In any case, the G70 is a solid car, especially for the money. My immediate impression was that maybe the previous owner's monthly payments were too high for them on the BMW, so they traded it in for a G70, which is still a great car, but at a decently lower price than the Bimmer. I wouldn't think it has anything to do with the potential oil leak you found, because, as it's been established, the car is still under warranty. They probably would've just had BMW fix it.

Had an 84 also, small world. Same with a ton of vw's after that.
OP, could it have also just been PO spilling oil and it showing up there? Sounds like you are on the right track with cleaning it up and seeing if it shows up again. I wouldn't bug the dealer's service manager unless it was literally dripping out and causing puddles. Now if it shows up again, I'd at least get down to the dealership and explain what's going on at that point. |

Funny this was the car I was looking to purchase; then it got sold. Ha! Since you've done the oil change diy; How was accessing the oil filter in that little space? Could it be that last oil change, some spilled from above when removing the filter cartridge and now just showing up?
