Coming up on 50k on my current set of Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 and ready to decide on my next set. Very happy with these and would definitely buy again.

Before I splurge on another set... I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion on a different all season that was more budget friendly.

I'm tempted to try something like this, what's the worst that could happen!?

Last set of A/S Pirelli tires I owned yrs back, I got a whopping 9K miles out of them b4 they were slicks

Don't get me wrong, they were decent handling tires for A/S, but wear fits into my decision as well.

I got an adjustment on new tires when replacing them - went with Michelin PilotSport A/S 3+ and have been using nothing but them ever since

I've not had good experience with Pirelli's either.

The previous generation of those tires were OEM for my GTI. They were decent in the dry, but were not very good in rain, and didn't grip well on wet pavement. Oddly enough they were OK in snow, but not to DWS 06 levels.

My biggest complaints were they wore out quickly and became VERY loud after about 50% wear. I was very happy to get rid of them.

The new generation hopefully is better.

I'm running Nokian WRG3s right now. They're an all-weather tire so they have the 3PMS rating for snow. They're as good as a snow for acceleration and braking, a bit less so for lateral grip. They're significantly better than the MPSS once the temp drops below 40°F. They're designed to be run year round without wearing horribly in the summer, but I have no data on that yet, and I'll probably swap summers on anyway. They also weren't nearly as squishy/squirmy as I was expecting, so the car is still plenty fun on dry roads (more so than with actual winters).

If you're not familiar with Nokian, they are widely regarded as the best winter tire manufacturer on the planet (they also make the Hakkapeliita). The latest generation of all weather is the WRG4, which runs about $700 shipped from simple tire.

I'm glad to hear your liking the WRG3's. I'm looking at them for my next set of winters since a true winter tire is a bit of overkill in my climate, but I still need something better than a traditional A/S tire.

Since the OP is in California, I'd probably recommend the Pilot Sport A/S 3+ or even a summer tire unless they go skiing frequently in the winter.

That's exactly my reasoning for going with the all-weather over a dedicated winter. Colorado is mostly dry, usually in the 40-50deg range in the winter. Of course, having said that, it's snowed like 4 times in the last 8 days.

My other car has Blizzaks with about 50% life in them, and the Nokians inspire far more confidence in every condition so far.

I live 80 miles from Tahoe and spend a ton of time in that region in all seasons. Epic Pass holder frequenting Kirkwood and Heavenly mostly. I have done really well with the DWS 06 and a pair of snow socks (no clearance for chains). 3rd full season at it with my F30.

I understand a dedicated winter summer setup is the way to go but it's not in the cards for me financially, quite frankly.

Need to make a decision in the next 1000 miles or so since I'm at the wear bars.

Goodyear will toss them on for $100 plus a $20 to the tech, in promise that he won't get lazy and fuck up my powder coated wheels. They put my current DWS set on but oddly refused to order me another saying company policy has changed in the past two years. Offered their own Eagle F1 Asymmetric as a comparable but then the guy said it's not available in 235/45/18 when he checked in the computer?

Tough choice that you have to live with for the next 50k...

without considering the deal on the Pirelli's, i was going to mention the General G-Max AS-05. although they're not at the same level as the Conti DWS06, tests and reviews indicate it is a very good tire and since General is under the Continental umbrella you can basically consider them rebranded-different line Continentals...

Also I might add... i don't like forever tires, ones that last very long.

I love brand that are affordable. I like to change tires 3yrs the most. I don't like to see tires that look dry and cracking.

Costco has bridgestone re 980’s AS for 710$ installed all in. I had those installed 2 yrs ago and have been happy with them in all conditions, great all around tire.

Another recommendation for michelin pilot sport A/S 3+. I run summer tires on my 335 (PS4S), but i have the A/S 3+ on a mazda 6 and they are a very good all around tire (pretty sure they are 225/45/19, so similar to BMW tire size). I have only had them in light snow/slosh, but dry and wet performance is fantastic (including very deep puddles and rainstorms with standing water at freeway speeds). Costco has $110 off michelin still (through march i think), and they should be in the price range you are requesting.
