Yeah I really love silver on cars...
Our current 340i is Estoril and while that's a pretty close 2nd to Glacier, I still miss our old 328i silver.. I really struggle to see peoples love for black cars, I find black loses all the crease lines, bumps, humps and details. A mate had a very nice E90 M3 in black... It (nearly) looked like any other E90 though as all the nice bits like the flares, humps and vents just disapered under the black colour. Grant's [edited to your ] F31 sure does look nice.

I used the 340i for my normal commute today, as Mrs Tengocity is going to use the 330e for a few weeks till she starts her new job. It's my usual 70 mile each way journey so good for comparing to the various previous cars I've had over the last few years in similar circumstances.
Plenty has been written about the 40i engine, so not a whole lot new here really, but my random thoughts and observations in no particular order: Cold start wasn't as loud as I'd expected, but possibly because the M4 is fairly ridiculous in that regard Suspension is remarkably soft and comfortable, probably a little too soft for my liking in comfort setting (or whatever it's called). It'll be interesting to see what it's like on it's 19" summer tyres, but I suspect I will drive in sports suspension mode mostly. Handling is still decent though, and leagues better than the original 335d suspension. I realise that I quite liked the VSS that I had, and in time I will look to a thicker rear ARB, and some extra front camber and alignment settings to change the balance a little, and have a sharper front end. The sunroof makes less noise than my old 335d Pano roof did. I used to have the blind closed mostly as there was wind noise even if roof was closed, but blind open... I thought they all did that, but this new one doesn't at all. Turn of pace was used for a little overtaking... the ZF8 is such a great gearbox, and better than the M DCT for most daily usage (a little lacking only when really on it). So smooth, yet fast, and always in the right gear. But the best thing is that engine. Feels like it has the BMW straight six DNA- so smooth and cultured sounding, but has decent reach and punch. Completely different character to the M4 engine, and so much more character than a 4 pot or a diesel. I'd heard plenty times the economy was great and it didn't disappoint, averaging 37mpg each way today over 140 total miles. That's 30% better than the M4 doing the same, and about 1-2mpg behind what I used to get from the 335d. Of course, it's way behind the 330e, which does 65mpg... But it's well worth it! If it can do that over one of my longer journeys to Scotland then could almost get from Oxford to Perth on the 1 tank, which would be handy for avoiding motorway service station fuel costs. Fundamentally it's great to be back in a F31, and it really feels like home. We did 113k in our first one, and love the idea of doing same again in this one. Thanks to Grant_7 once again for speccing such a lovely car, and looking after it so well.

How do you keep your garage so tidy?
Mine is littered with spiders and their webs everywhere. Not to mention dead carcasses of flies and everything else

Didn't take long for modding to start...
Fitted the MP rear diffuser today, and the MP interior trim set. Car is booked in to Cotswold next Friday to have the MP roof spoiler painted and fitted and also the M Performance Limited Slip differential!

I like it, it transforms the way you can put the power down, really handy for the RWD cars, it will make it step out easier if provoked but once its sideways the control is soooo much better!

On the M Performance diff... I am very happy with it, but I can't say that I've used it lots for sliding around. Having had the M4 with it's diff, and then driving my dad's M135i with an open diff it was really clear to me just how much the diff helps with the traction on corner exits, and without it I could feel it being lost, and the car not being as sharp and precise as I'd like (my dad's car). So on fitting the LSD to the 340i what I can say is that I am happy to give it a right bootful coming out of a corner, or a quick exit on a junction (even if it's wet), and knowing it's going to just hook up and go. If you're not smooth, or you really want to, then you can get it to kick out, but it's all nicely controllable and predictable, and the car is in no way traction limited. I like it, and for me, a performance car with this kind of power is really finished off with the diff. I've also added a bootmod3 flash, so it's up around the 400+bhp mark, and so the diff is really going to be handy to ensure they all get to the road.

As well as the diff, and Bootmod3, I've also done the XHP transmission flash, which has gone hand in hand with BM3 to unlock the inner hooligan in this otherwise very unassuming looking car!
Put in to sport+, and the thing is an absolute rocket ship! I'd say it's the match of the M4 from 2000 to 5000rpm, with the M4 top end noticeably sharper and stronger at the upper revs. It's also much more linear, feeling less obviously turboed than the 340i with a flash tune. Anyway, overtaking urge is superb, and with the gearbox reflexes going up a couple of notches it really does give the car a whole different personality with a button press. It's smooth and docile when you want, and hooligan when the road and conditions are right. What's also helped is some new M Performance discs, and OEM M4 brake pads, so everything is looking brad new, and the pads giving a fair bit more bite and stopping power. More than good enough for spirited road use for me. Also fitted is some ACS sports springs and dampers, with EDC coded out, and a thicker rear ARB. They've been excellent, and have retained the excellent ride comfort, but added in a whole new level of body control over the standard adaptive set up. In comparison to the ACS RS kit I had before on the 335d, I would say they are an excellent halfway house, and feel just how you imagine the BMW engineers would have the car if the accountants didn't budget for cheap dampers. So it feels very OEM. The RS kit was a bit firmer, but also a lot flatter in corners, and genuinely takes handling to a new level, but I think this set up would suit 80-90% of folk best. They're good for how we will use this car (wife's car and all round daily usage), but if I'm honest, if it was just me driving the car and didn't have the M4 as well, then I'd rather have the RS kit. So that's the suspension (springs, dampers, rear ARB), a M Performance LSD, bootmod3 flash tune plus XHP transmission flash, slightly uprated brakes, MP interior, MP rear spoiler and diffuser.... and one almighty good all rounder. Only other things I might still do is add a towbar; maybe try some 437 wheels with 245/265 tyres. The only thing I really would like to improve is the front end, so make turn in a little better. The bigger tyre up front might help (at the cost of more road noise and fuel consumption I'm guessing), or I could try and adjustable top mount/and or M3 lower arms, so that I've got more camber and a stiffer bushing. However, I don't think it's a priority given how little driving I'm doing these days, and that I can jump in the M4 if I want that kind of handling.

Rear wing. I can get some more later if you want them from a specific angle, these are just some that were already in my phone.

Yes, for me personally, I would only have the spoiler or side skirts colour coded. I had one on my previous Estoril blue F31 335d, and always really liked it. It took me ages to decide the first time round whether to do it, as thought it might look a bit naff, but I think it integrates well and just gives the rear a little more visual interest.
