That's what I'd be worried about as well. I'm not a mechanic, but its probably safe to say that scored cylinders won't fix themselves and will present a longivity issue down the road. Who eats the repair cost 13 months from now? Probably not BMW.... I'd almost demand a warranty extension.

Well , I am gonna save up for the warranty extension then. I could extend it for another 2 years for around 2000 CAD and I think should be good

Look at it this way, you have paperwork stating it has cylinder scoring. Even if that is an overstatement, any issues that could develop comes back to that inspection, even your simple multi-shot picture adds to that evidence.

I can't see BMW giving you a letter of comfort, but any independent engineer, (if there is reluctance of BMW to take full responsibility), will immediately link back to this issue.

I bought my current 535i as an ex BMW management car, at just over a year old with 6k miles. There was an issue picked up by the tech' moving the car, valvetronic motor wasn't calibrating correctly. During the replacement he noticed a couple of rust marks on the camshaft. Sent pictures to BMW, they authorised a new camshaft.

I questioned the future reliability of the engine, opened up to replace a camshaft at such low mileage, outside the factory. I was invited to see the engine apart, discuss it with the Master Tech. Garage contacted BMW to see what they'd do to assure me for the future. BMW UK sweetened the deal with a 5-year service pack. (We don't get that free over here in the UK). Assured me the warranty was cast iron and the fact it was worked on, was on record. If anything did develop as a result of the remedial work, it would be acknowledged in any future assessment.
hey so the issue is back here car stalling again..
My Indy mechanic checked and the A/F ratio was running too rich and the car tried to balanced it but ended up dying instead. Will bring it back to the dealership. goodthing warranty is still up might get a huge replacement this time since its my 3rd time and I contacted BMW CA and they gonna look at it

Thanks for updating this thread. I am very interested in the best possible outcome for you.

Leak down tests are encouraging. The larger question is whether current extent of scoring will degrade over time. The request for more pictures is prudent.

Thanks fellow Airplane lover

Yeah since the foreman tested the car and he saw the problem first hand and directly told me he is going to put a new PUMA case as he already had it before but was closed by BMW. He even told me this is the first time for a b58 to have this problem

Well - BMW made aircraft engines in the past. The more well known BMW engine was used in FW-190 during WW II.

I hope the same precision engineering approach will yield a new engine for you. Not from FW 190 of course. :-)

Bad news man, they do not approve the engine swap. they changed the PUMA case to a TC case and they wanted to replace the Valve covers as they suspect a leak for that.

1 week until the part comes, Want to call BMW canada about the scoring but ohwell what can I do

Thanks for the update. Calling BMW CA is still valuable. Polite but firm pressure sometimes helps.

When does your warranty expire?

I guess the real question is "what does every other engine look like at that mileage". Heck, my 340 with 33333 km today might look the same, but I've never had the need to get it checked. Unless an issue pops up, one would never scope the cylinders.

Cold starts are the worst and you do get some scoring regardless. Years ago my buddy had issues with his Chevy engine (80's motor). When he pulled it apart, you could see the side that the block heater was on (perfect). The other side looked like it went through h*ll.

They suspected oil leak near the intake valves and hence replaces all the valve covers so 😔

You need to push this issue hard with BMW Canada. If you roll over you will end up eating a big repair bill down the road. Good luck bro!
