Upgrading 320D ED PLUS Wheels

I’m a current owner of a 65 plate 320d Ed plus with its original 16” OEM Wheels, however I’m interested in upgrading my wheels and I quite like the look of the 400M 18” wheels.

This is my first time ever upgrading wheels on a car and don’t know what I need to look at to consider if 1) they will fit and 2) if there is any parts I will need to change.

I’ve heard from some forums it is impossible to change the ED PLUS wheels up by diameter but I don’t see why there would be an issue as the only change I can see is it sits 10mm lower I believe then other F30 models.

Will the 400M wheels fit, what size tyre will fit, how does the TPMS work, will this come already installed on the 400M’s from eBay, will I need to change suspensions/spacers (typically I want to avoid this for now).

Any help would be appreciated.

400M will fit without issue. no need to change suspension or spacers.

the wheels you buy from ebay are unlikely to come with TPMS, you will have to check the listing.

you will need VDO tpms or HUF if your car is older than 2014.

tire sizes for 400M, 18x8 ET34

245/40/18(25.7") best handling
225/45/18(26") OEM size on F3/4 series, non ED(or Plus)
235/45/18(26.3") best ride and reduced fenderwell gap.

A lot of the 400M are in fact staggered ; fronts 8j and the back usually 8.5j. Is this likely to effect anything.

If this is no issue in regards to the tires what setup would you recommend for sizing.

Staggered setup comes as standard on M-sport trim, I have it. No issues, just cannot swap front to rear and back, if tyres on one axle wears a bit more... 225/45R18 (8j) front and 255/40/18 (8.5j) rear. And 255 at rear looks fantastic...

staggered will not affect anything and you can run square tire size on the staggered widths, however rotating front to back is not recommended, since the rear wheel offset is higher than the front.

staggered tire size combos to consider are:

245/40/18 front, 255/40/18 rear or OEM size combo 225/45/18 front, 255/40/18 rear

Just to confirm I have a F30 320D ED and I upgraded from the stock 16s to 398 alloys which are staggered 18s without any issues. I run stock tyre sizes 225/45/18 front and 255/40/18 rear. As you are upgrading to genuine BMW alloys which come stock on other F30's there's no need for spacers etc they will be a straight swap.

The only thing you may notice is a firmer ride due to less sidewall and a decrease in MPG due to bigger rims but it's definitely worth it for the looks alone.

Can you put a number on the MPG loss you believe you would have lost.

Furthermore did you find any positives in driving with the new wheels e.g. better handling, better acceleration?

I have a 2014 320d ED and while I have not changed my wheels to another set of BMW wheels, I have changed them for aftermarket 18x8's (see picture). I have also installed blue M-Sport breaker calipers and discs as the puny brakes behind a 16 inch wheel looked crap.

Fuel consuption changes.

I was getting 68-72 mpg (UK gallon) on the 16".
My first switch to 18" was into winter tyres. MPG dropped to between 59 and 64 MPG depending on winter or summer.
My second switch to 18's was into All Season tyres and so far I'm seeing similar MPG to the winters, although I am driving faster as my commute to work through road works had increased from a 50mph to a 60mph zone.

Are these a staggered setup or both rear and fronts 8j. Was there any issue with the wider wheels being nearer to the strut? Did you have to install spacers?

Furthermore, when you first upgraded to the 18” wheels did the fitting company change the TPMS over for you?

What was the difference in ride quality/handling?

Both front and rear are 18x8. The winter setup was 225/45R18 and the All Seasons are 235/45R18 front and rear. No issues with clearance or rubbing. I am lowered on ACS springs and shocks. I am not using spacers.

When I changed from 16 to my first set of 18's I bought new TPMS sensors as I garage the 16's to put back on the car when I sell it. The tyre people transferred the TPMS sensors from my old 18's to new 18's when I switched from Winter to All Seasons. I have experienced no issues with the sensors and iDrive.

The winters were run flats and were an awful ride, improved by the ACS springs and shocks. The All Seasons are go flats and the ride is so much nicer although not as comfortable as the huge sidewalls of the 16's gave. I am very pleased with the current setup.

Thank you very much you’ve been a great help as well as everyone else on this thread.

Finally, how much were you charged for the TPMS change, fitting and balancing of the new wheels. And did you just use the original locking wheel nut and bolts?

I bought the TPMS sensors for around £35 each from ukpartsdirect.com.

The tyres were bought and fitted by tyres on the drive. The TPMS sensor swap over was done as part of the service, along with fitting and balancing. Tyres I think came out at around £650.

Locking wheel nuts were used from my original set.
