ZF 6-Speed 340ix Notchy 3rd gear

Hi all,

Shifting into 3rd gear is especially notchy (not the usual BMW gearbox notchiness). It seems to be more pronounced when cold, but I've noticed it almost always happens when downshifting. It feels like there is a resistance and I can feel something like the lever sliding past or catching on something that requires more force. Are my synchros going bad?

Now that it's more warm out, shifting from 2nd into 3rd is mostly smooth. Once in awhile I can feel it catch, but for sure when downshifting. No noise or gear grinding, which is good.

When downshifting, I'll push the gear lever right up against the gate and can feel the resistance. It requires more force and I feel the mechanical/metallic catching. None of my other gears really do this, which is why I'm concerned.

I replaced with Motul DCTF (BMW MTF LT-5 spec approved) a few months ago.

Just normal behavior? I'm taking it into the dealer, but I'm tuned so unsure of what the result could be, so preparing for the worst.

Did you ever figure out what this was? I realize this is an old thread but I'm having the exact same issues in my gearbox and I'm wondering what what it is. Trans shop thought it was the synchro.
